Lordsburg approves healthy budget boost for 1973-74

Lordsburg city council approved a higher general fund for 1973-74 with projected revenues up nearly 90 000 to 482 000 from 392 000. Investment income rises to 24 000 and utilities gain 20 000. Expenditures total 460 715, street department gets 123 894, salaries 82 375 in police 102 525, and admin expenses 85 841. See Council on page 3.

RC&D Elects Officer Slate At Meeting Here

A.D. Sonny Brownfield of Deming Doc Campbell of Gila Hot Springs and Hugh B. McKeen of Glenwood were re elected by acclamation to third terms as officers of the Southwest Resource Conservation and Development council at the Lordsburg meeting. Dr. Leon Bower praised the nominating committee and the trio for progress. Over 70 participants supported new projects and resolutions benefiting the four county area served by the council. David King New Mexico State Planning officer reported he had been visiting in the district.

Lordsburg Hosts VFW Convention For District Four

VFW post 3099 in Lordsburg will host the district four convention over a two day period with a Past Commander's Luncheon at the Maverick Room El Charro Restaurant a 7 30 p m cocktail hour at La Fiesta Club and a Cinco De Mayo dance. The Sunday session opens with an ice breaker at the Elks Lodge followed by the official welcome and a 2 p m business meeting to elect officers and conduct convention affairs.

Chamber Board Sets Meeting at Range Restaurant

Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce board of directors will meet Monday at 7 p.m. at the Range Restaurant. A steak dinner for members follows a beans meal after the recent membership drive, then a regular business session.

Hidalgo County Commissioners Review 1973-74 Budget Requests

The Hidalgo County Commissioners tentatively approved the 1973-74 budget and will send it to the State Department of Finance with final adjustments allowed at a later hearing. They earmarked 1000 for Hidalgo County Fair Board livestock entries, 500 for the extension service, and awarded the low bid of 4158 for cattle guards with Rio Grande Steel and Massey Enterprises as other bidders. They also approved a resolution for Emergent Employment Act funds, acknowledged library board appointments, planned bids for a new sheriff’s department police car, and noted revenue sharing budget approval by the Department of Finance.

Long Time Resident Passes Away Here

Arthur Benjamin Smith born March 4 1903 in Roosevelt Arizona died in Lordsburg on April 24 He moved to Lordsburg with family on September 8 1908 and lived there 65 years Survivors include six sons Leland Raymond Barton Bruce of Lordsburg Albert and John of Tuc son Also three sisters Rosie Rhoades Martha Waites Mattie Gleason of Colton California two brothers Dick of Tacoma and Bill of Lordsburg Nine grandchildren four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews He was a machinist at Banner Mine 18 years then in construction and church member Funeral services were held Heather Chapel April 26 at 2 pm with Rev Dick Ross officiating Pallbearers listed Burial Mountain View Cemetery
