Clean-up Committee Reports Progress After Tour

The Clean-up and Beautification committee praised the city for weed cutting and grading along streets. Animas Street showed strong improvement. private yards and business lots looked greener, neater, with further spring progress anticipated.

Miss Estrada Named To Honor Society At NMSU

Diddy D Estrada of Lordsburg was named to SPURS the national sophomore women s honor society at the 15th Annual Women of Achievement Banquet on May 2. She was chosen for high scholarship campus service leadership and nominated as vice president and one of two delegates to attend the SPURS convention in Long Beach California. She is listed as a freshman in elementary education, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesus Estrada of Lordsburg.

LHS Students Win Honorable Mention in New Mexico Writing Contest

Esther Lehman and Carl Richardson of LHS earned honorable mentions among 500 students from 40 New Mexico high schools in the NMSU Creative Writing Contest. Esther’s short story Sweet Music and Carl’s poem What Is Love received recognition.

Pre School Registration at Lordsburg Schools Set

Pre school registration will be held Wednesday May 15 at all Lordsburg elementary schools from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Parents with children born in 1962 eligible for 1968 1969 entry urged to register. Teachers will register non English speaking students for summer school showing birth and health certificates including DPT polio and smallpox vaccines.

County Officials Seek to Block Large Land Exchanges

Hidalgo County Board of Commissioners warn they received notices from the Bureau of Land Management about deeds exchanged to trade over 100,000 acres of private land for Federal land in other counties. The move would put the U Bald Ranch area under Federal control, remove the land from tax rolls, and shift tax burden to other county taxpayers. Officials fear loss of assessed valuation and urge taxpayers to contact congressional delegation for help.

Medina to Address VFEW At Deming Convention

Mary Ruth Medina president of the New Mexico Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars will lead state officers attending District No 4 Convention in Deming Claude Close Howard Post 1477. Other officers include Dell Tuttle Maude Miles Muriel Wilson Eve Simmons John R. Klotzbach. election and installation set for 1968-69. Posts represented include Deming Lordsburg Bayard Silver City and others. Meetings begin at 2 pm followed by a pot luck supper.

City orders horse removal from Lordsburg by June 1 1968

City Chief of Police Tony Arredondo announces the Lordsburg city council directed all horses be removed from the city limits by June 1 1968 and other arrangements be made.

Elephants Run Loose at Fairgrounds Sunday Night

Police report seven elephants wandering near the fairgrounds around 2:45 am Monday after a call from Bill Ware. Officer Robert Rodriguez coordinated with Carson & Barnes Circus to corral the animals and return them to their tethering area. Chief Tony Arredondo recalled a past tiger incident at the same site.

Adrian Richins Heads Watershed Committee

Adrian Richins elected president of the Virden-Duncan Watershed Project steering committee. The panel reviewed flood damage, needed treatments, and drafted plans for the watershed application to request aid from the Southwestern New Mexico Resource Conservation and Development Project. Attending members included Tr Rochins, W. Billingsley, Sven Thyverson, and Wilbur Lunt.

Mrs Caraway Dies In Deming Hospital

Funeral services were held in Deming for Mrs Made lyn Fischbach Caraway who died Thursday May 2 in Mimbres Memorial Hospital. A 40 year resident, she and her late husband Robert were involved in mining in Hidalgo County and surrounding areas. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery in Deming.

Service Officer to Visit Lordsburg VFW Post

John R. Klotzbach of the New Mexico Department of Veterans Affairs will visit the Lordsburg VFW Post on Saturday May 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to assist veterans and dependents with benefits claims. He will stay into the evening for those unable to attend daytime hours. He will also attend the VFW District No. 4 Convention in Deming on Sunday starting at 2 p.m. with election and installation of officers and a pot luck supper after.

Mavericks smash six records at district meet

LHS Mavericks set district and school marks in the Mile Medley Relay and multiple events at the Tularosa meet. Lordsburg placed fourth with 70 percent, while six LHS athletes qualified for the state meet in Albuquerque.
