Lordsburg voters may decide in late May or early June on a two mill property tax increase over three years to fund capital outlay projects. Superintendent Dr. Joe Price says about $34,000 yearly would support school improvements and the measure follows state legislation.
Lordsburg city fathers faced a barrage of citizen requests at the Wednesday night council meeting. Earl Ward, local Exxon dealer, sought consent to erect a 10 foot radio tower atop the new water tank for communications, noting FCC license approval for the tower and network.
Public reception for R. V. Traylor scheduled Sunday May 18 1975 from 2 to 5 PM at the Civic Center honors his long service to the Lordsburg School System since 1942. The Lordsburg Faculty and former teachers attend. The public is invited. Ward discusses Exxon radio units and a water tank mounted tower proposal with FAA considerations and a council review pending.
The City of Lordsburg sues Chicago Bridge & Iron, William Matotan Associates, Continental Insurance and Western Surety for punitive damages after a 2.5 million gallon water tank collapsed July 31 1974 four miles south of Lordsburg. A new tank built by Phelps Dodge at no charge is now in use. City attorneys Rick and Paul Sherman pursue the case following a March 12 council vote. Matotan says he has not been informed. CB&I in Houston says no copy of the suit has been received.
A one car crash about four miles east of the Road Forks Overpass on I 10 killed Benny S. Valdez 51 of Lordsburg around 1 a.m. The New Mexico State Police report says the car left the road at high speed and overturned. Valdez died en route to Hidalgo General Hospital.
