Sensible Highway program outlined for ample safety

Dwyre state engineer J P Church and Frank district maintenance chief outlined a highway plan at Lordsburg to add a central white stripe and pass warning signs on a new paved route from No 70 to the Arizona border. Governor Tingley and Grover Conroy cite a ten million dollar highway bond program expected to drive a major state project over two years. April New Mexico tax receipts reached 365 615, up from 269 963 last year, as tourism outlook grows brighter.

George Brown Dies in Oklahoma After Illness

George Brown brother of Mrs Van Meter died in Oklahoma on April 29 after a very serious illness. He had traveled from Lordsburg prior to his death.

The body of Mrs. Sarah Hays of Lordsburg was brought from Phoenix on Wednesday. She died aged about the year she was crowned queen among Arizona pioneers. Remains will be laid to rest at Muir Lot. A more extended obituary will be published next.

Rubio Charged After Alleged Shooting Incident

Cisco Rubio got into a Sunday night argument and allegedly fired at Nitivadad Gomez, wounding her left arm. Gomez was treated at Lordsburg Hospital, then sent home. Rubio was bound over by Judge Marsalis to the District Court in $1,000 bail. Attorney L P McHaf represented the state.

Lions Club votes to discontinue for summer after next meeting

The Lions Club met in regular session Tuesday and voted to discontinue for the summer after the next meeting. Guest D W Capps of Portland Oregon, manager of Piggly Wiggly market dept, attended. A nominating committee of Austin Jeffus and Rosenstein was named for next year. Miller praised Lundgren with a key and greeting from the international president for securing two new members. A resolution asked Mayor Brown to designate a clean up week covering streets alleys and all weeds inside the corporation limits.

State sales tax up in April says Governor Tingley

Governor Tingley reports April sales tax receipts at 282 738, up from 200 400 in April 1936, attributing the rise to improved business conditions across the state.

Attack plane flights land at Lordsburg airport

Three flights of attack planes, carrying nine, nine and four passengers, landed at Lordsburg Tuesday noon. In total 17 planes used 1156 gallons of gas and 6 quarts oil. Some ships diverted to Tucson and Bakersfield. return to Lordsburg is slated for May 26.
