Lordsburg School Board Approves Tentative Budget 1986 87

The Lordsburg School Board approved a 3.5 million dollar budget for 1986 87 with concerns over the State of New Mexico’s cash flow. Superintendent Phil DeFoor said the plan remains tentative pending funding certainty.

Child Identification Clinic Planned at Civic Center

The Hidalgo Sheriff Department will host a Children Identification Clinic this Saturday May 3 at the Civic Center. Doors open 9 30 A M and the clinic runs until all children present are processed. Volunteers from the sheriff's department and youth groups assist.

Western Bank Observes Bank Week with Art Display

Western Bank will celebrate Bank Week by serving coffee and cookies all day Monday. An eight piece display of Southwestern art by Chrystal Peterson of Animas will be shown starting Monday. Volunteers will fingerprint, photograph, gather data, and hand out reference material. Photographs cost $1.00. other services are free. Individuals may choose to have the Sheriff keep current records on file or preserve them themselves. The notice links to missing children concerns, citing State Law Enforcement Reporter figures of 60 daily disappearances and 20,000 to 50,000 annual unsolved cases.

Great Seal Replica Endures The Seasons

John Schimmel created a stone chip and cement replica of the Great Seal of the United States in Hidalgo County. The 5 by 5 foot slab shows 13 stars, 13 stripes, 13 leaves, olives, and arrows with the missing scroll side. Civilians have vandalized part of the seal but local watchers support moving it to the courthouse lawn as a companion to the Veteran's monument.

Lordsburg Board To Meet May 6 In Board Room

The Lordsburg Municipal Schools Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday May 6 at 7 00 p m in the Board Room. The Department of Human Services Social Services Division has moved to Hidalgo Medical Complex with offices beside Border Area Mental Health Services. Visitors should enter from the east side entrance per social worker Pilar Gandara.

Ralph Backer Rites Held At Fort Bayard

Ralph Backer 64 died April 25 at Mimbers Memorial Hospital in Deming New Mexico He was born April 30 1921 in El Paso Texas and moved to Lordsburg in 1930 He had lived in Deming since 1983 and belonged to the Disabled Veterans Survivors include his wife Jewel Backer of Deming his mother Goldie Backer Yocky of Silver City a daughter Bettie Marie Ricky of McMinnville Oregon a brother Alfred Backer of Deming and a sister Mildred Jones of Deming He was preceded in death by his father Final resting place Fort Bayard National Cemetery on April 28 1986

Hernandez Guilty In Armed Robbery Case In Lordsburg

Raymond J. Hernandez was found guilty by a 12 member jury in District Court Lordsburg for armed robbery tied to the 1985 Wilsons residence robbery. A pre sentence report was ordered for May 9 with Hernandez held on a $25,000 cash bond.

Roadforks Terminal Completed Southwest

Southwest Terminal Corporation completed a 4,000,000 gallon petroleum storage and distribution terminal in Road Forks New Mexico at the I-10 and State 80 junction. The site sits on five acres at Shady Grove Truck Stop near the Southern Pacific Pipeline 12 inch east line. The terminal links refineries in southern New Mexico and El Paso to Tucson and Phoenix terminals.

Kenneth Victor Burd age 46 died April 28 in Tucson Arizona. He was a long time resident of Lordsburg and a member of the New Mexico State Police Mounted Patrol NRA Local 75 Ironworker s Union. He served as jail supervisor for the Hidaglo County Jail.
