Hidalgo County farmers gather in Virden to oppose proposed federal legislation altering potato production. A resolution committee urges senators and representatives to block the measure, citing a 16 percent acreage cut and harm to small growers, with 125 local growers dependent on potatoes.

Broadway of America Motorcade Arrives Lordsburg April 6

Official proclamation states the Broadway of America motorcade from San Diego to Nashville will reach Lordsburg at P M and stay briefly en route to El Paso. An estimated 2 to 18 cars with delegates from California and Arizona are expected. Lordsburg hopes to send at least one delegate to the Nashville meeting amid heavier tourist traffic due to a San Diego exposition from late May through November.

Death of W A Wright Revered Red Rock Resident

W A Wright died last week in Silver City after a lengthy illness. He was a longtime respected resident of Red Rock. Mrs Wright, his widow, is the nest master at Red Rock and has held the post for several years. He leaves many relatives and friends to mourn his departure.

Death of Herbert Daniels En Route to Santa Fe

News reports the death of Herbert Daniels in a driving accident while traveling from El Paso to Santa Fe to visit his wife, secretary to Attorney General Frank Patten. Daniels, employed in El Paso, was with a friend when the crash occurred. Mrs Daniels, daughter of Mrs Jesse Turner of Silver City, is connected to local Eastern Star circles in Lordsburg.

Soil Erosion Service Official Praises CCC Work

Dr C J Whitfield engineer of the Soil Erosion Service at Safford visited to inspect soil erosion work by Engineer Stewart Robeson and praised progress. He called the Red Rock CCC camp a credit to the Erosion Service.

Murder suspect Jack Sullivan reported captured on West Coast

Special Officer J K Vinson of the Southern Pacific received a wire Tuesday morning announcing that Jack Sullivan, suspected in the murder of Officer John Bradberry, former sheriff of Greenlee County, was apprehended at Redwood City California. The bandit will likely be tried in Cochise County. An $800 reward offered by the Southern Pacific will be paid to the catcher.

Joint Lions and Boy Scouts district meet at Deming

Minor Huffman from El Paso announced that on Tuesday April 9 a Lions and Boy Scouts district meeting will be held in Deming. A banquet will follow at the Methodist Church undercroft with District Governor Donovan Hoover of Santa Fe as Lions speaker and Scout Executive Minor Huffman as Boy Scouts speaker. Lordsburg is hoped to send a strong delegation.

Two Promoted Social Service Workers Honored

Miss Janet Kovalchek, district No 4 field worker, is promoted to oversee the Social Service division statewide. The Soil Erosion Service broadens its Gila River watershed program with Major Fleming leading a growing team of specialists in engineering range management soil characteristics and hydrology. At a courthouse meeting in Lordsburg a Townsend club started with 40 members. Elected officers are Dr Charles Fowler president Sam Killebrew vice president and Mrs Sam Killebrew secretary treasurer. Ten new members have joined since then. Next meeting set for Friday April 5 at 7:00 pm at the courthouse.

Lordsburg Polo Clout Organized Wednesday Night

Lordsburg polo enthusiasts met Wednesday evening at the Community Public Service Company's office in RDB Whittenberg, a former polo star, was elected captain with Coach H G Pwhardt as assistant. The polo field near the Gee ranch is being laid out under Shelley Mayes and D W Collins with 20 ERA men assisting. Practice starts immediately to form a crack team ready to meet any Southwestern Association opponent.

Postponed Spring Football Game Between New Mexico Aggies and Silver City Teachers

Coach Jerry Hines announced the spring football game between the New Mexico Aggies and the Silver City Teachers is moved to Saturday April 6 to allow more practice time. The teams had entered two squads in the Southwestern Basketball Tournament last week, hindering football practice. An intramural track meet will replace the game on Miller Field that Saturday.

County Health Chief Visits Ordsburg For County Review

Dr. C H Douthitt director of county health work for the State Bureau of Public Health arrived in Ordsburg Tuesday to survey the situation. He drove to various county areas then returned to Deming to join State Sanitary Engineer Paul Fox. He praised the region's progress and Miss Verna Hancock county hen nurse for her work.
