Crawford Elected Rep Crawford Reflects On First Session

Von Rue Crawford the new State Representative for Luna Hidalgo counties says his first legislative session was real and interesting. He beat Daniel Pettijohn in the November general election and took a seat after William Upton withdrew due to illness. Crawford filed three bills and two memorials, intends to join three interim committees, and plans to visit Hidalgo County to consult with constituents.

Old Roy Hotel Being Torn Down

Lordsburg will lose the long standing Roy Motel on Shakespeare Street as salvaging proceeds to clear the corner lot for a First National Bank parking area. Built before 1900 it was once owned by Mrs. Homer Brooks and served Southern Pacific Railroad workers until closing after a new SP housing complex opened.

Last year local withholding and payments totaled about 2.001 million dollars, representing roughly 0.36 percent of New Mexico’s 556 million dollar state total. Government projections suggest the overall tax load will be somewhat smaller this year.

Two Die In 1 10 Crash Near Lordsburg

A January crash on I 10 about 25 miles east of Lordsburg in Grant County killed Loren J. Smith 40 of Ontario California and passenger Larry Kasey 35 of San Jose California. They were in a speeding semi in the eastbound lane when they hit a parked broken semitrailer on the roadside.
