Legislature approves general appropriations bill amid tax increases

The legislature raised about 25 million dollars and adopted a general appropriations bill near 225 million for the fiscal year starting July 1. Senate approved the bill amid debate on spending time and education budget cuts, with amendments restoring funds and a 34-7 vote. Tax changes include higher sales, corporate, and income taxes. vehicle excise tax also rises. Governor Cargo sent the package to the governor for signature.

Missing Banker Arrested Here in Federal Probe

Federal agents with Silver City Police Chief Tommy Ryan and Hidalgo Sheriff Leroy McCarty arrested El Paso bank president R. F. Lockhart in a Bel Shore motel. He disappeared with 60000 from the El Paso National Bank and the sum was found in his room. a 100000 recovery claim is filed by his bonding company. A U S commissioner hearing in Albuquerque questioned his competency for removal to the El Paso federal court.

S&WC Districts Meet With Highway Official

The Virden and Animas Soil and Water Conservation Districts met with James A. Bird from the State Highway Dept last Friday to draft a memorandum of understanding. The Virden district approved it. Animas will act later. Bird noted 1 600 miles of unfenced roads and offered materials if landowners fence ranch boundaries. He prioritized planning aid for stock watering facilities to support highway fencing. Attendees included L A Conner Fred Ewing Marvin Jones Don Burton Bill Swift and Rodney Newton. City to review two bids for 100 low rent housing units

The municipal housing authority heard proposals from Whittaker Corporation and Lockwood Construction Co for building 100 low rent units on a Main Street site owned by Mayor Koff. HUD funds of about 83000 will subsidize rents under a turn key lease with private ownership and city as renter. A third interested developer may present later, and a final selection will follow evaluation with the Housing Assistance Administration in Fort Worth.

Burglary Charges Filed Against Two Suspects

Hidalgo County magistrate court filed burglary charges against Ignacio Apolin ar and Tommy Earl Hilliard for theft from Johnson's store window Monday night. Apolinar, 26, and Hilliard, 22, were arrested in Deming and Hidalgo, respectively. Police noted the window was broken at 11 24 p m and items stolen including a movie camera, a still camera and an electric shave, all of which were recovered.
