Up to-Date Stores Owner Named Colonel on Gov Dempsey Staff

Col. D S Pon owner of Up to Date stores and other enterprises received a commission as colonel on Gov. Dempsey's staff and a colonel aide-de-camp NMNG in New Mexico life-long appointment. Col Pon and Col Holt, named in 1935, form the Lordsburg "War Department."

WAACS recruitment visit in Silver City draws interest

Lt Fern McGhee and Miss Augusta Leeper of the WAACS, aided by two recruiting sergeants from Silver City, spent the week soliciting memberships. They report some signups and others considering enlistment. Miss Leeper previously served as social hostess at the Hilton Hotel in El Paso.

Luna County Old Timers set April 20 for annual celebration amid wartime. At a special meeting, Judge A W Marshall was named president, Mrs Josephine Smith secretary, Joe Kelly treasurer, Tom Watson publicity. Committee voted to donate fifty dollars to the Red Cross.

Legion Commander Visits Lordsburg for Brief Conference

Rev Joseph W Peterson department commander of the American Legion from Belen dropped into Lordsburg on Tuesday afternoon for a brief conference with Commander Eugene Montague and Legion committee chairs E M Brickley and Tom J Mayfield. Navy Recruiting Cruiser To Visit Lordsburg

A U S Navy recruiting cruiser wagon will tour New Mexico lighting rallies for men and women to enlist in the WAVES and for ages 17 to 18 or 38 to 50. The four man crew will provide information and interview prospects aboard the four ton, 48 foot land cruiser with galley and sleeping bunks. The cruiser arrives Lordsburg around April 1 with daytime talks and free Navy movies at local halls.

Hidalgo county earned a high rating in a KOB Albuquerque broadcast for the entry New Mexico in the War by Gladys Cox a 16 year old Lordsburg High School freshman.
