The Wilson School staged a playful program with scenes Peep-Show Park in the morning and evening. Performers included third and fourth graders as zoo staff and animals, with first and second graders doing dance and pageant roles.
Ellen Capps compiles twelve motivational reminders from a glass frame in a California sanatorium. The list covers time, perseverance, work, character, kindness, duty, economy, patience, talent, and originating joy. War Department informs Walter and Mrs. Dunagan that their son Sergeant Damon Dunagan is a prisoner of war held by Japan in the Philippines. The Adjutant General will send a confirmation letter, and Col Sage notes prisoners are being fairly well fed and cared for under international agreements.
Cpl Tom Kerr son of Mr and Mrs Kerr serving with the armed forces in Alaska could not reach home for a birthday gift so he drew a rose on the arm of the cross with the name Mother. Mrs Kerr works at the army sub depot in Deming.
The second Sunday in April will call the service men and add stars for those called in recent months. Relatives should attend to answer for their service man when named. Special music will be offered and the church urges broader attendance.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Smith concluded a fine visit with Mrs. Smiths parents Mr. and Mrs. K. J. Wood and Ruths friends, then returned to Corona California. Rev. Smith, minister of the Church of Christ, preached Sunday morning and led singing at the evening services.
Lucille Byrd of Lordsburg married Cpl. Robert Thompson of the Lordsburg Internment Camp in a quiet Sunday evening ceremony at the Baptist parsonage. Rev H T Ray officiated with Sally Furgerson as matron of honor and Pvt. Gilbert Whit as best man.
Newly arrived officers at the camp include Captain David Garrett, Captain L. Rodgers, Captain Arthur Brisco, and Lieutenant Elmer Quillen, signaling expanded leadership staffing at the post.
Frank Richards, at the Florida based air training base, reports scoring 125 on an air corps exam the best ever at Ft Sem Houston center. He lives in Room 221 at the Tropic Hotel Miami Beach, a government run swanky hotel with a pool and games near the beach. Richards, 18, is son of Ruther Richards of Lordsburg and serves in the air force technical training corps.
Sgt Frank H Brown of Foster Field reports to a Liberal representative that his brother 1st Lt Lawrence B Brown has twice earned decorations for superior service in North Africa. Frank Brown himself is in line for appointment as warrant officer in the parachute maintenance division at Foster Field. Their mother, Mrs Brown, was seriously ill en route to California but is now out of danger.
Joseph Lee Goldman son of Mr and Mrs L S Goldman of Lordsburg has reported to the U S naval training station at Farragut Idaho for recruit training. He will learn seamanship and undergo physical hardening and upon graduation may be selected for further training or transferred to the fleet.
Lordshore visitors to Silver City last Thursday included Mesdames Edmunds or Roy Carson, J. W. Burrus, W. F. Winters and J. H. Clark in a brief social return.
Jesse T. Smith former Lordsburg schools superintendent and current chief of the field force in the Bureau of Revenue. his showy Albuquerque area home on a five acre FHA aided lot hosts visitors. Marquis Smith, attorney in Denver, receives a $600 raise after self funding his education. Jesse T. Jr. is a bombardier lieutenant. Billy Lee assists cadets at Corsicana. Ouida married Lt Don Foulk of the Army Air Force and honeymooning in Illinois.
Lordsburg Chapter No 21 90 E and held a special meeting Tuesday evening for District Deputy Mrs Mary Baker Deming to receive instructions of the Worthy Grand Matron A school of instruction is planned in the chapter hall next Thursday afternoon Worthy Grand Matron Mrs Lottie Howell Encino and Worthy Grand Patron Dr Willis Neeley Roswell will make their official visit at this meeting
Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Jeffus spent Sunday visiting Silver City and Ft. Bayard.
At an early Sunday hour fire struck the Indian Metals Company fluorspar mill in the northwest city area. Fire chief J H Baxter and crew fought the blaze but the machinery building burned. Cr Pineney and staff organized wreckage removal and rapid repairs while Bitter Lumber Company offered yard space. F E Slick urged immediate repairs to motors belts and conveyors so operations resume swiftly.
The Lions and Lionesses enjoyed a Home Ec banquet hosted by Miss Bernetta Hendrix and her staff. Lion Mayfield opened the program, with Lion Lu Robinson and others adjoining in skits, songs, and reminiscences.
Francis Riordan will act as master of ceremonies at the Old Timers Reunion on Tuesday April 20. He is an outstanding MC and it is anticipated talent from the Army Air base will be present to entertain. Joe Garcia reserved Mission Cafe for the day to provide a marvelous time.
Mrs. Fredrick Kipp Ward wife of Lt. Fred Ward director of the Continental Airlines Flying School recently traveled from Denver to El Paso and then by train to Lordsburg to spend a few days with the Muirs and Kipps before returning to her husband in Denver.
Mrs Luella Clark was elected to the board of the New Mexico Twhereclusosi Association for a four year term expiring March 21, 1947. The annual meeting was held in Albuquerque on March 20.
Promoted from second lieutenant to first lieutenant Mylea M Cohen stationed at Camp Claiborne Louisiana serves as platoon leader in Company H 411th Infantry Cactus Division. Former assistant manager of Union Department Store joined the army March 1941 commissioned October 1942.
Billy Poindexter of Memphis Tennessee, serving in the air corps, receives a promotion to First Lieutenant. He also serves as a part time instructor on B26 bombers.
Members of the Christian Church and Sunday School held a pot luck supper Monday evening followed by games in the church. Guests from out of town included Rev Roy Smith of Corona California Rev Richard Mills and Leroy Mills of Douglas and Mrs Doyle Cowart of El Paso.
The Missionary Society of the Baptist Church held its personal service meeting Wednesday led by Mrs. O'Dell Dobbs. The note says the service occurs on the last Wednesday when five Wednesdays occur in a month.
Thomas Allen Kerr 81 died March 29 after a heart attack on the Kerr Ranch. He left a large family including daughter Mrs Nat Gammon and sons Elmer Fred and Elmer Kerr, plus 19 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral was held at the Methodist Church with next week’s notice promising fuller details.
The State Game Warden warns that 1942 45 licenses expired March 31 and April 1 begins legal hunting and fishing with 1943 44 licenses. He urges buyers to obtain the digest of laws and refuge map, notes opening dates for warm weather fishing April 1 and trout May 15, and asks patience as wartime delays affect license supply. He decries illegal taking and stresses wartime food program support.

Pvt Arthur Altuna of Sioux Falls South Dakota reports the army air corps is a service branch and mentions Jake Martinez graduates from the school there and soon will be sent to another station He thanks the editor for sending The Liberal weekly.
Master David Stone is home from Lordsburg Hospital after a successful tonsillectomy.
The Friday Bridge Club gathered last week at the home of Mrs Forrest Sanders. Members present included Mesdames C. B. Austin, J. FE. Bureng, Faye Clayton, and others with guests Mesdames H. Bryant, Tom Clayton, Clay Fuller, James Hughes and W Tinker.

Hidalgo county Red Cross chair Mrs Ravens reports the 2400 War Fund quota is nearly met with 1960.50 turned in by Mrs Austin and others in Lordsburg. The drive continues as donors are urged to contribute to reach the goal soon, with several expected to respond.
The Women's Advisory Committee of the War Manpower Commission calls on women to join active service on farms this summer. It stresses no immediate farm labor is required, and applications will come as needs arise locally. The effort, led by Miss Margaret A. Hickey, urges women to organize in communities to supply seasonal or full time labor and to aid local agencies and youth mobilization for farm work.
Mrs Elmer Sjostrom and her daughter from Everett Washington leave today after visiting Mrs Sjostrom's parents Dr and Mrs BE C DeMoss at their home.
Carl Lehman, who moved here from Arizona three years ago, marks his third anniversary by moving into new enlarged quarters in the remodelled Birch Field building beside the Palace Theatre on Wear Railroad Avenue. He begins an opening sale and announces a full advertisement in the Lordsburg Liberal. Workmen have remodeled the store with four show windows and redecorated interiors, plus a new cement walk at the front.
The USO announces the roster of hostesses for the coming week. Friday features Mr. and Mrs. F. Y. Traylor, Saturday Miss Margaret Fuller, Sunday afternoon Mrs. Mary Lee Fairly, Sunday evening Mrs. A. L. Green, Monday Mrs. F. H. Singer, Tuesday and Thursday are closed, Wednesday Miss Exa Barton and Mrs. Alan Koff.
Three newborns are reported at Lordsburg Hospital. Marian Grace May was born March 26 to Mr and Mrs Paul H May. Farren Orville Webb arrived March 30 weighing 8 pounds 9 ounces. Douglas Wolfforth was born March 30 weighing 7 pounds 3 4 ounces.
Mrs. Marguerite Purcell of Tucson, taking lessons at Maranello Beauty Shop, visited her sister Miss Tommy Jones this week and will remain several months to complete the fall course.
The Women’s Society of Christian Service gathers this afternoon at Mrs. H. E. Scofield’s home with Mrs. Forrest Sanders as co host. The devotional will be led by Mrs. Sanders and Mrs. Tom Clayton will review the Latin America Study Book.
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a meeting on Wednesday April 7 at 7 30 p m with Mrs Ruby Scott.
Episcopal services were held in the Woman's Club building last Sunday evening with Rev. Wood presiding. Services will be held each Sunday at 8 p m.
