Funeral Services Saturday For John Kennell

Funeral services for John Kenneth Spencer a prominent Lordsburg businessman were held at Heather Chapel at 10 a.m. last Saturday. The Rev. Arthur Shaw of the First Methodist Church officiated. Spencer was born July 24 1901 in Buffalo New York and died Tuesday evening March 5 at his home on Animal Road. He joined the Michigan State Police in 1925 and served as post commander for 15 years, introducing flying to the force as its first pilot.

Lordsburg Junior High Wins Saturday Basketball Tournament

Lordsburg Junior High School defeated Silver City Juniors 24 20 to claim the invitational title in a local gym on Saturday. Led by David Estrada with 12 points, Lordsburg opened tournament play by beating Solomonville Arizona 39 20 as Chesley led Solomonville.

Lordsburg Junior High Team Dinner Honors First Place

Rice's Cafe hosted a Sunday dinner for Lordsburg Junior High School basketball team and coach Jim Rusk. Hostesses Mrs Ole Martinson and Mrs Arthur Estrada celebrated the squad's first place finish in the Saturday invitational tournament. Attendees included Johnny Mack Elms David Estrada Apolonio Jiminez Willie McDonald Louis Rodriguez Ray Rodriguez Edward Ruiz Arthur Estrada Gilbert Frausto Ricardo Guerra Rudy Alacron Ronnie Barnes Dick Fulkerson Manuel Ramirez and the coach.

Betty Gilligan Advances to State Finals in Oratorical Contest

Lordsburg High School senior Betty Gilligan won the seventh district contest and eliminated a District B representative last Saturday to reach the American Legion sponsored state finals. She also won the prior day’s Mister ct contest and has earned an art award and the DAR Good Citizen award for her school activities.

Portales hosts state finals for future teachers contest

Miss Gilligan, a Lordsburg High School senior, holds multiple honors including National Honor Society member, junior class treasurer librarian and editor of The Maverick paper. She ranked second in the state in a Knights of Pythias speech contest during her junior year and was active in chorus junior year. The state finals will be held today in Portales.
