Lordsburg Lions In Tourney Lead As Games Set

Lordsburg and Bowie lead the field in the first annual Lordsburg Lions In Tourney. The event tees off tomorrow with teams from ten neighboring towns, including Virden, Silver City, Hachita and McKinney, vying for championships at Plock noon. Willis Johnson returns for Virden, while Silver City leans on the State Teacher's College squad. Consolation and final matches follow with season tickets priced 75 cents adults, 50 cents children.

Lions Club hosts guest speakers and community activities

A Lions Club meeting featured guests including Basila and Commander Rock. Talks covered Civilian Conservation and Red Rock camp initiatives, with plans for future events at the High School auditorium and a Lions Pythias basketball game.

Bunco Party Hosted by Mrs Willis Brown Remains Social

Mrs Willis Brown hosted a Bunco party at Mrs John Cavins home last Monday evening with guests including Miss Mary Laurie Chengworth Anna Mae Yarbrough Goldie Wright and couples Mr and Mrs Clarence Elkins Mr and Mrs Willis Brown and Mr Walton Conrad Formett Lovett. After Bunco several games cards and candy making followed with Willis Brown and Goldie Wright sharing high scores.

Supervisor in Lordsburg Promoted to California Post

Mrs. Jule E. Schultz, longtime supervisor of Social Service in Lordsburg, has been promoted to a higher position in the San Francisco sector. She left Lordsburg for the coast last Friday morning after moving from Catron county and prior social work in eastern cities.

Radio artist to perform in Lordsburg concert

Lordsburg students will welcome California radio artist and his wife for a concert Tuesday night March 19 at 8 pm. Irish tenor Mr Joe Kearns will sing while Mrs Kearns accompanies on piano. The duo has performed for schools and stations in Chicago and California and promises a well attended, refined program.

Sheriff and A D A Head to Santa Fe for Sentences

Sheriff C A Conner and Assistant District Attorney L P McHalffey left Monday for Santa Fe with Trinidad Navarrio who was convicted of breaking and entering a home at night and sentenced to 1 to 2 years. Carl Johnson received 2 to 3 years for theft of an International truck from Don Pace of Safford and Maximiliano Rodriguez faced 24 to 5 years after driving a Southern Pacific engine into a derail switch. The judge was George W Hay. W F Beaird is held on $7M bond for alleged lottery activity. Mrs John Curry of Animas bought a Oldsmobile coupe through the Montague Townsend motor company last week.

Mary Josephine’s Trip to Panama Canal and Cuba

Mary Josephine DeMoss travels with Stevens College students from Columbia Missouri to Havana Cuba and Cristobal Panama with visits to Morro Castle Gatun Lake and the Panama Canal area. The 13 day journey includes St Louis New Orleans the Gulf of Mexico Puerto Cabesas and return to New Orleans and home.

CCC Program Delights Lordsburg High Audience

A large Lordsburg public school CCC program drew a record auditorium crowd on March 1 1935. Pro fessor Shaw and organizers earned praise for a glittering show featuring Allen Espey songs and plays including Dedicated to My Mother and Haunted House with a cast including Paul Jones Harold Winslow Preston Parson and many others.

California Capitalist To Spud In Oil Well By April 1

Dr W D Purse and associate O E Stateville locate a 6340 acre lease on the Muir ranch southeast of Lordsburg Section 8 T24S R17W and plan to spud the first oil well. Local driller H D Martin will handle operations to 3500 feet with full depth testing. geologists expect commercial oil above that depth. A Lordsburg Chamber report praises Purse’s integrity and credit, noting the region’s oil potential and steady pursuit until depth is reached.

Chief Mortgage Examiner FHA Visits Lordsburg

John Bingham head of the Federal Housing Administration spent two days in Lordsburg consulting with the First National Bank and FHA officers. He noted that state banks will soon receive government approval and be ready to issue loans within two to three weeks. Bingham praised the program as one of the best government projects now in operation.

Thomas Hurley Dale Jones Jr Christened

Thomas Hurley Dale Jones Jr eight weeks old son of Sergeant and Mrs Hurley Dale Jones was christened Sunday afternoon at the Catholic Church by Rev Father Richard Power. The baby’s godfather was Capt J J Ince of the English Royal Flying Corps and Mrs C J Austin was the baby’s godmother. Capt Ince later served as State Aviation Director under the late Governor Rolfe of California.

Former Sheriff Shot in Rail Incident at Bowie

Former Greenlee county sheriff John Bradberry was shot by a hobo riding a freight at Bowie on Monday during a search with an immigration officer for transients. Bradberry, taken to Tucson in grave condition, was a well known local figure and cousin of the Lordsburg Bradberrys.

Rabbit Drive In The Animas Valley Promotion

County Agent Brown and BR. T. Dunlap urge a rabbit drive in the Animas Valley starting Wednesday March 20 for one or two days with a free barbecue at the Dunlap ranch. T.
