Guns registered in Hidalgo County urge cooperation

The U S Treasury Department is seeking owners of certain guns in Hidalgo County for registration with First National Bank of Lordsburg assisting. Las Cruces man L G Mayfield said full automatic guns and barrels under 18 inches are illegal unless registered. The bank runs a large ad explaining registration while local readers hear from A G Pat Carley about Life of a Hasher and Hidalgo counts attendees at the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association meet in Albuquerque.

Magic Program Slated Friday at High School

Dr. Murray Holt, son of a China medical missionary, will perform an hour and a half magic show at the High School Auditorium next Friday March 2 at 8 p.m. Sponsored by the Maverick staff, tickets cost 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children. His act highlights Orient style tricks including the Lamas Prayer Wheel learned in Tibet and a two-rope rope trick built after searching India. He claims to have baffled science with a headless illusion and has appeared on radio and in Hollywood. He authored A Wanderer in Mysterious Asia Strange Beliefs of Tibet and India and Magic of the Orient. The performer, who spent 15 years in the Orient, promises more than 60 effects and predicts the audience will believe in magic after one show.

Nazarene Church to Host Rev Gunstream Tonight

The Rev. R. C. Gunstream, superintendent of the New Mexico District, will conduct a service at the Nazarene Church tonight at 7 30 o clock. Pastor William McMahon welcomes all to attend the Friday night service and other regular church activities in Lordsburg.

Temperature Readings From Southern Pacific Railroad

The following temperature readings were recorded for the U S Weather Bureau by the Southern Pacific Railroad in the period Friday March 7 through Thursday March 13. Highs ranged from 59 to 70 degrees with daily lows from 26 to 35.

Hidalgo Assured Of Own Solon

A longstanding gentlemen’s agreement makes Hidalgo and Grant Counties share a state representative. Speaker H Vearle Payne guided the bill to law with Senate approval. Rep C C Roy of Silver City aided the effort. The 22nd District covers both counties though Grant voters outnumber Hidalgo, leading officials to expect a Hidalgo member.

Burchs Observe Golden Wedding Anniversary Here

Dr and Mrs R Burch celebrate their golden wedding at the home of Mr and Mrs MM Young with children and grandchildren present. A three tiered cake topped dinner and songs from their youth accompanied by Mrs Young at the piano. The couple received gifts and greetings from several states. Mrs Burch also marks her 75th birthday amid plans noting Dr Burch’s fifty years in medicine and their move to Lordsburg last year.

Lions Club Ladies Night Observed By Members

More than 30 couples attended the Lions Club ladies night last Friday at the Woman's Club building. Lion President C. B. Austin served as master of ceremonies with a malt quartet including Dr. Austin T. J. Mayfield E. C. Payne and S. H. Gass. Gass sang a solo with Harvey Broaks at the piano. Mayfield led a quiz program assisted by Carry Galusha Pete Chase and R. B. Rice. Food committee members were H. H. Bryant Alton Powell and Mr. Rice.

Dr Evans to Speak at First Methodist Sunday

Dr L L Evans will preach the 11 am service Sunday at the First Methodist Church announced by Rev Frank lin R Poage. Holy week begins Palm Sunday March 30 and runs to Easter April 6 with daily 7 30 pm services and special local music. The theme Dilemmas Dissolved will cover scenes of trivia trials tragedy and triumph involving Christ at the Passover.

Appeal Issued for New Legion Auxiliary Members

The American Legion Auxiliary contest between Blues and Reds has twenty members on each side. With over 50 members needed this year, a gain of more than 10 is hoped. Dokey Ceremonial Set for March 22 Across Five Temples

A joint Dokey ceremonial bringing together five Temples from Oklahoma Texas New Mexico and Arizona takes place Saturday March 22. Visitors register by 2 p.m. then attend a 3 to 5 p.m. parade and street work followed by the ceremonial from 5 to 7 p.m. Dinner runs 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a 9 p.m. dance. Easter Seal Drive Aids Cerebral Palsy Work In New Mexico

The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors the 1947 Easter Seal distribution in New Mexico. March 6 through April 6 funding expanded services for cerebral palsy sufferers, with the New Mexico Society for Crippled Children planning direct services, education programs, local divisions in Albuquerque and Las Cruces, and more trained personnel and facilities.

Lordsburg Midgets win the midget division at the Central School Gymnasium tournament on March 8 defeating Deming 35 18 in the opener and Virden 27 15 in the final as Louis and Philipe Alvarez led scorers.
