City Plans Parking Lot For Trucks And Police Change

At a regular meeting the city council accepted the resignation of policeman Boc Bogart effective immediately and appointed Fred Robbs to fill the vacancy. A plan to rent a lot at Chester Ave and Railroad Ave for heavy trucks was approved with Romney as the sole committee to arrange it. The council also considered garbage service complaints and approved minor improvements. The El Paso Natural Gas Co sought 60 extra feet of right of way near the city’s grounds, a grant was approved for the Coronado Heights Sub-division map change, and bids for painting City Hall and a police department automobile were accepted.

Obituary of Nan Cureton at 56 in Lordsburg ranch home

Nan Cureton died after a short illness at her ranch home on Tuesday morning. She was born January 9, 1915 in Lake Park Minnesota and moved to Lordsburg in 1939 where she worked on the DeMoss hospital nursing staff. She married James Cureton in 1942 at Angels Camp California. Survived by husband James one brother Norman Elton of Lake Park and four sisters. Funeral set for Heather Mortuary at 4 p m Saturday with Rev Paul Hively officiating. Interment Mountain View Cemetery.

Lordsburg Opens State Tourney Versus Las Vegas in Albuquerque

Lordsburg Mavericks meet Las Vegas at 4:00 p m in the first State Tournament round in Albuquerque Virden faces Farmington at 10:00 a m in the same session Las Vegas is among the tournament’s fastest teams and beat defending champions Portales in the regular season St Michael s of Santa Fe, 24 1, is the district runner up and favored to win the title Virden, champion of the 8th district, has an 18 8 record and is tipped to beat Farmington If Lordsburg wins they meet the Albuquerque Clovis winner at 7:00 p m Friday The schedule includes semifinals Saturday and a 9:00 p m championship Also notes a back page update: Virden defeated Farmington 47 43 in the first State Tournament game at 11:00 a m Thursday.

American Legion District Commander to Visit Saturday

A. B. Elder of Hurley New Mexico Commander of District 7 will visit Robert Swan Post 30 on Saturday at 8:00 PM. The Legion Home will host the meeting with regular business and Elder will discuss any problems with members.

Star of Radio and Screen Visits Lordsburg Tuesday

Ernest Tubbs a renowned screen and radio star stopped in Lordsburg last Tuesday evening while returning to Nashville from the west coast. He is a regular on WSM radio in Nashville and famous for his hillbilly recordings found on local juke boxes.

Vacation Bible School Clinic at Lordsburg First Baptist

The Southwestern Baptist Association holds a Vacation Bible School clinic at First Baptist Church Lordsburg on Monday March 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. Mrs. David Moore leads as VBS chairman with handicraft displays and basket weaving taught in the afternoon. Churches are invited to send two VBS workers and supply sandwiches plus salad while the church provides coffee and pie.

Basketball Scores to Be Broadcast Five Times Daily

The state tournament scores will be broadcast on KSIL five times daily while Lordsburg or Virden competes. Musgrove Cheerolet Company sponsors the public service features. Broadcast times are 7:30 am, 11:45 am, 1:25 pm, 4:00 pm, and 5:25 pm with brief Lordsburg and Virden game summaries.

Red Cross Drive Starts Monday

Announcement by R. B. Ownby, chairman, states the annual Red Cross Fund Raising Campaign begins Monday and runs at least two weeks. Committees are in place for each division and will contact everyone for contributions. Mail checks to the drive chairman. Lions Club sponsors this year’s effort.

Lordsburg junior team dominates with wins over Virden Hurley and Silver City to claim the Junior High Tournament. Final over Silver City 42 25 secures the championship while Santa Rita edges Silver City 18 17 in the midget final.
