The Observation Post recalls a dispute over municipal repairs and a controversial pay project. It cites a January 1958 ad and notes repeated calls by aldermen to fix streets, with no progress after years of debate and spending.
The Moctezuma Club held its regular meeting February 23 with President Rudy Chavez presiding. New members Felipe Orona, Molly Orona, and their spouse took the oath. refreshments were served by Mrs. Juan Moralez, Mrs. Gilbert, and Mrs. Arturo Guzman. The next meeting is planned for March 3.
The World Day of Prayer service will be held at the Methodist Church on Friday March 9 at 7 30 PM under the leadership of Ms Wc Strickland. The time set was for 7 00 PM. Community members are invited to attend.
Verick Booster Club president Pete Maxwell urges members and supporters to attend a 7:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday March 13 at City Hall to discuss plans for the upcoming banquet and pass arrangements.
Filing deadline 5 p.m. Tuesday shows 23 Democrats and four Republicans filing for county and precinct offices in the May 8 primary. Surprise candidates include Mrs Valeria Allen Smith of Lordsburg and Ray Edington of Rodeo for state representative.
A statewide alert for the New Mexico Army National Guard was initiated by Adjutant General Major General John P. Jolly at 5 30 p m on March 5. Capt Jesus J Estrada reported 80 percent present by 7 p m as the alert plan took effect lasting two hours and counted as a paid drill in lieu of the March 20 schedule.
Dr. Howard C. Sivells of Albuquerque will lead a 10 day revival at the First Baptist Church of Lordsburg from Friday night March 9 to Sunday March 18. Services are 7 30 p m and 10 a m except Saturdays with evening services each Saturday night. Dr. Sivells, noted Brotherhood and Royal Ambassador official, has extensive background in education and ministry and is described as an outstanding speaker. The public is invited.
Miss Sally Baker of Lordsburg is among 87 students named to the Dean of Arts and Sciences honor roll at New Mexico State University for the fall semester. She is a freshman majoring in mathematics and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl D. Baker.
The bookmobile will visit Ro deo on March 19 from 10 15 to 11 00 a m and Animas from 12 00 to 1 00 p m on the same date.
Two complete slates for mayor and aldermen were filed by Friday deadline at city hall along with two candidates for municipal judge. The Greater Lordsburg ticket led by Mayor Alan A. Koff lists aldermen Eugene P. Noce Robert R. Harwood Francisco H. Chaires Jr and W U Miller. The Independent Party slate names Mayor Harber J. Heather and aldermen Fred J. Ewing B M Kimbley Foy E. Powell Rodolfo Chavez. Municipal judge candidates are C L Brown and James H. Kinkema. Election is set for Tuesday April 3 1962.
Lordsburg Mavericks defeated Carrizozo 61 55 to become regional runners up and qualify for the state tournament in Albuquerque. Aaron Powell led Lordsburg with 16 points, Dewey Reay 15, Art Estrada 13 as Carrizozo trio Bob Crenshaw 15 and J Beltram Sext 13 paced the visitors.
Robert Swan Unit No. 30 American Legion held a March 5 meeting led by President Martinson. They finalized plans to entertain the Legion on its 42nd birthday and Girls and Boys State delegates on March 12 at 7 30 PM at the Legion hall with delegates parents and Auxiliary guests. Chamber of Commerce banquet set for March 22 at the Legion hall chaired by Mrs Kathryne Montague.
A correction states Townsend Fuller operates the Doctor's Clinical Laboratory, not the Lordsburg Clinical Laboratory as previously reported. The Lordsburg establishment is run by C. A. Lien.
President John F Kennedy proclaimed March as Red Cross Month highlighting the national drive for members and funds. Lordsburg Hidalgo County chapter officials urge support as the 1962 campaign kicks off with 24 hour Red Cross service and local fundraising efforts.
