Lordsburg Elects Four Councillors In City Vote

Lordsburg voters chose four councillors for four year terms. Clark Smith led Ward Two with 386 votes, while incumbent Pansy McDonald had 364 and Richie Franks 154 in Ward One. Baltazar Salinas won Ward Three with 255 votes over Virgil Widby 166. Ward Four winner was Ann Marie Moore with 184, ahead of Israel Barrera ? and write-in Thomas Flores 72. New councillors take office next week.

Lordsburg Housing Board Approves Preliminary Budget Plan

The Lordsburg Housing Authority board approved a preliminary budget for the 92/93 fiscal year on February 26 and granted a 5 percent salary increase to administrators retroactive to February 1, 1992. Current salaries rise to 908 for the executive director, 660 for the deputy director, and 494 for the administrative clerk under a $363,910 budget with possible part time labor cuts.

Two Marijuana Seizures Reported By Local Agencies

Hidalgo County Sheriff and U S Border Patrol report two marijuana seizures in days apart. On Feb 22 a 1984 VW van and 177.05 pounds of marijuana valued at 141640 were seized near Animas. cargo and vehicle turned over to U S Customs. On Mar 1 a 1979 Chevy and a 1991 Chevy pickup, plus 50.90 pounds of marijuana valued at 40720, were seized south of Roadforks. four men including an American and a green card holder were arrested and vehicles turned over to U S Customs. Sheriff Hall said possession of the vehicles is being pursued.

Lordsburg Seeks State Funds to Rehab City Streets

The City of Lordsburg applied to the State Coop Program for funds to rehabilitate streets and asked for public input, which drew no response. It lists urgent repairs, notes over $3,000 spent on a street planned for program work, cites Hardin Street as in dire need, and asks residents to wait for state approval before proceeding. A second CDBG application will follow to finish remaining streets.

Lordsburg School Board Receives Accreditation Report

The Lordsburg Municipal Schools accreditation review presented February 5 by Superintendent Phil DeFoor finds the district largely compliant with New Mexico education standards. Citations cover licensure and facility safety issues, all addressed or in remediation. the report praises accountability, management, and instructional planning across Sections I and II, with Section III noting overall compliance.

Little League Registration Continues

Registration continues with a second session on Wednesday March 11 at the National Guard Armory from 5 30 to 7 30 PM. A birth certificate copy must be shown. The league seeks three more teams to form a Senior League for players aged 13 to 15.

Lola Hammond Services To Be Held Saturday

Lola Hammond 85 Lordsburg resident died Monday March 2 at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 2 00 at the Assembly of God church. Baca's Funeral Chapels in Deming in charge of arrangements. Complete obituary will be in next week's Liberal. Sheriff Bob Hall attended the funeral of David Stone in El Paso. He and Game and Fish employee Paul Pirtle brought the remains of Stone out from the Granite Gap area the previous week.

Willie McDonald Named Director of Lordsburg Events Center

Willie McDonald leads the Lordsburg Special Events Center as director aiming to cut costs and broaden offerings. He plans youth and adult dances, aerobics, discounts, broader menus, new bowling gear, and countywide events while pursuing municipal pool operation certification and summer programming. The center operates daily with bowling, sports courts, tables, video games and a swimming pool under his supervision.
