The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce elected Foy Powell as President, Steve Raey as 1st Vice President, and Bill Collins as 2nd Vice President. Services Held For Samuel of Hachita
Services were held at Heather Chapel on February 25 for Wesley Paul Samuel of Hachita. The Rev. John Mansell presided, with burial at Mountain View Cemetery and a Masonic Lodge funeral rite. Pallbearers were Duncan Freeman, Carlos Johnson, Rex Kipp, Dan Lucas, Bill Livingston, and Jim Spurgeon. Samuel, born January 4, 1926 in Vici Oklahoma, lived with his father in Douglas Arizona, worked for Diamond A Ranch in Hereford, moved to Hachita in 1945 as wagon boss, married Velva Spurgeon on April 8, 1951 in Lordsburg, had two sons Wesley Eugene and Bruce Alan, survived by wife, two sons, and brothers Bert and Jack. He was a self employed rancher and bus contractor for Lordsburg School System since 1966.

Lordsburg Hikes Natural Gas Rates After April 1
Lordsburg council approved higher rates effective April 1 with a minimum charge of 2.70 for 200 cubic feet as the city buys extra gas from New Mexico to avoid penalties to El Paso Natural Gas. A moratorium was lifted to allow new hookups and a committee was formed to explain the rate change to the public.

Hidalgo County Undersheriff Eugene Moore and State Police Officer Jim Sides investigated a possible breaking and entering at 6:45 a.m. March 1 at Bolins Continental Divide store in Separ. Brazos Arthur Minshaw, 19, of Fort Worth, Texas, was found in the building with a forced door and is jailed on breaking and entering charges. investigation continues.

Hospital To Close For Week In Hidalgo Region
Hidalgo General Hospital will close from February 28 to March 6 as Dr James Baxter chief of staff and resident physician is out of town. All in patients have been transferred and ER care is unavailable until Sunday. Ambulance service remains on call with paramedic Don McNutt and five EMTs on duty around the clock. Full services resume March 6.

Port of Entry aids truckers and tourists south of Lordsburg
A new joint Port of Entry and Tourist Welcome Center near Lordsburg combines operations of the New Mexico Motor Transportation Department and the Department of Development. Since opening in 1976 the center has grown, hosting four full time staff and one part time assistant with over six hundred visitors in January 1977. It aims to assist travelers with New Mexico points of interest and boost local chamber activities.
