Lordsburg High School will close Friday February 25 in memory of Wesley Buster Samuel a friend and colleague. Schools will resume Monday with regular schedule and the missed day will be made up later announced principal Phil DeFoor.
A windstorm felled mobile homes and sparked a forest fire while causing crashes across New Mexico. The National Weather Service logged gusts up to 83 mph on Tuesday, easing to 10 to 25 mph on Wednesday. State police identified Wesley Samuel of Hachita, 61, as the man who died in a four vehicle pileup on Interstate 10 east of Lordsburg, with officials noting a heart attack as a likely cause.
A long sought difibrillator for Hidalgo County Hospital has been delivered funded mainly by local contributions. Community members participated in fundraising and volunteering as part of the effort amid a fatal crash and widespread storm related damage across the region.
A national EPA study finds U S residents produce at least 160 million tons of solid waste annually, with Hidalgo County contributing about 4 400 tons including 630 tons of food scraps. Average per capita disposal is 4 1 pounds daily, and 55 pounds of paper and 14 pounds of food comprise most household refuse.
Pyramid Service becomes the 100th member of the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce this week. Slim's Car Wash sits at 99th as the chamber grows from 63 members in May 1976, with John Robertson serving as chamber manager since May 1976.
