Midget games at Bell gymnasium feature Deming vs Central 9 00 a m Lordsburg Central vs Garfield 10 30 Lordsburg Central vs Imas 11 15 a m. Final and semi final rounds for both divisions occur in Smith gymnasium in the afternoon and evening.

Navy Men Injured in Arizona Car Wreck

Two Navy men traveling in a 1947 Pontiac from San Diego to New York were injured on Arizona State Highway 86, 19 miles west of Lordsburg, when the driver, M. Knowlton, fell asleep and lost control. Knowlton suffered head cuts and a twisted ankle. Hidalgo hospital treated him. Novotny had deep leg and hand cuts and did not go to the hospital.

Three-Vehicle Crash Kills One Injures Several

On Friday February 24 at 5 30 p m a three car collision on Highway 80 two and a half miles west of town left one dead and several injured. J G Stecker of Batavia New York drove a 1948 Chevrolet eastward unharmed. Joseph Ziehler 1948 Buick sustained a fractured arm. his son Anthony a broken nose and cut lip. Charles Zeeman and wife traveling with mother in law in a 1949 Mercury suffered severe facial lacerations and other injuries. Mrs Zeeman was treated at Hidalgo County Hospital. Zeeman and mother in law were bruised and shaken.

Phoenix Fire Loss Figures Shared By Lion Club Speaker

Joe Dollar of Phoenix, sales manager for Thunderbird Sales, spoke to the Lions Club. He cited ten year insured fire losses from 1940 to 1949 totaling over 4.835 billion dollars, with 1949 losses above 667 million. He noted causes include home carelessness with matches and cigarettes accounting for 37 percent.

Ideal Store Opens in New Shakespeare Second Location

The Ideal Store, owned by Mrs. Rachel Atkin son, opens in a new cement and brick building at Shakespeare and Second streets. The shop, owned by Herbert Strange, features two large windows on Second street, a green awning, cream interior, and departments for ladies wear babies and children shoes plus men’s dress accessories. Area Receives Needed Rainfall

Rain began last Sunday afternoon and continued through the night, easing drought conditions. The gentle steady rain penetrated soil to about three inches, with intermittent showers since, benefiting cattle ranges farms lawns and gardens.

A Well-Child clinic will be held at the county courthouse on Wednesday March 8 from 9 30 a m to 12 noon. Mothers are asked to bring infants and preschool children. Dr Kaufman will be in charge of the clinic.

Highway 80 Association Set Spring Meeting In Lordsburg

The Highway 80 Association Western division will hold its spring meeting in Lordsburg as part of a broader effort by the local Chamber of Commerce to grow membership. Secretary R. Ji. Ownby notes 12 new members join recently, including business and camp figures from White's Camp to The Ideal store. The meeting will include Las Cruces Deming Lordsburg area communities, with plans still forming and several regional invitations underway.

Legion Auxiliary Initiates New Members at Legion Hall

The American Legion Auxiliary held initiation for new members on Tuesday February 28 at the Legion hall. New installees included Mrs Kenneth H Holleman Mrs Bob Williams Mrs Eugene Montague Mrs Sue Landinas and Mrs H A Blackburn. The group voted to oppose the Hoover report as it pertains to the Veterans Administration. Refreshments were served after the meeting by Mrs Jack Morgan Mrs Blas Noce and Mrs Lola Jones.

Red Cross Drive In Hidalgo County Opens March 6th

The American Red Cross drive in Lordsburg and Hidalgo county opens Monday morning March 6. The goal is 1270 dollars with 945 needed locally and 334 to the International Red Cross fund. Mrs Nat Gammon hosts a 930 coffee for volunteers to receive final instructions. Pamphlets buttons and stickers will be distributed and volunteers assigned to the territory. Lordsburg Odd Fellows Confer Degrees On Deming and Local Candidates

The Lordsburg Independent Order of Odd Fellows degree team conferred the first second and third degrees on candidates from Deming Bayard and Lordsburg at a Saturday meeting in the Knights of Pythias hall. A. D. Smith presided and District Deputy Grand Master Glen Dorsett led the degree work with Alamogordo lodge members assisting. A supper followed and local wives formed a Rebekah lodge with plans to organize on March 15.
