Poisonings in area pets spark police alert

A rash of pet poisonings near the present hospital on South Main has killed five dogs and two cats, raising fears for children and prompting local residents to condemn the act. The Observation Post urges humane treatment and notes ongoing state tax debate and highway regulation measures as related civic concerns.

Bond Proposal Election Called for Animas ISD 6

The Animas Independent School District No. 6 board voted to propose a 65000 bond to add two classrooms and a nurse's room at the elementary school and to improve the high school gym and enclosure of a porch. An election is set for March 26 at the three polling places for district voters who own real estate. Houston Moore, board president, cited rising enrollment and new families as reasons for the proposed improvements.

Commander Powers urged drastic action to oust Fidel Castro including possible invasion if needed. He backed total economic sanctions and a tight blockade and pledged aid to Cubans to overthrow the regime if other methods fail. Forest Service Orders Removal of Wild Domestic Hogs

The U S Forest Service issues a Closing Order banning grazing of domesticated pigs wild on National Forest land in the Peloncillo Mountains from March 2 to 31 1963. Hogs harming resources water holes vegetation and livestock management may be removed. hunting by others is not authorized. Meat may be made available to Cochise County hospital.

Tiger Kills Tiger in Lordsburg Freight Cargo

A semi trailer in Lordsburg released a tiger and Shetland ponies at 7:30 a.m. last Saturday. F J Whitrock of Arnolds Park agreed to shoot the tiger after police requested help from Officer Ivan Kennett who offered his pistol. Whitrock killed the tiger with two shots valued at 1500 dollars and then reportedly skinned the animal. Disposition of the carcass was not reported.

Animas 4B Champs Meet Hagerman In Regional Playoff

Animas Panthers, 4B champions, face Hagerman, 5B runners-up, in a regional playoff at Lordsburg High School gym Saturday night. Jim Richards led Animas with 34 points in a 70 56 final over Truth or Consequences foes. Joe Croom may miss action due to injury.

More Interest Shown In Local Golf Course

Two more groups joined the Knights of Pythias and the Masonic Lodge in a local golf course project last Sunday. Cubacs and the Elks contributed, with about sixty truckloads of top soil spread over nine greens. leveling next Sunday, seed planting set for March 17, as public generosity sustains progress despite high costs.

Southwest Supply Co. Wins City Sidewalk Bid

The city council opened bids for a concrete sidewalk around the new municipal building on South Main. Southwest Supply Co. offered the low bid of 750 dollars for 500 feet of five foot wide, four inch thick sidewalk and the bid was accepted over H Bishop Lumber Co which bid 975 dollars.

Muster Day Lecture Highlights National Guard Unit

Lt Col Hamilton gave a Muster Day lecture on OCS to Battery C of the 2nd Automatic Weapons Battalion 200th Artillery in Santa Fe New Mexico. The event included refreshments and a post drill party with families. New enlistees include Sgt Ralph K Young and Pvt Raymond Hood Jr joining the Charlie Battery roster. Recruiting continues to reach full strength.
