Superintendent Miller reports J Cloud Mille ner and Mrs FE Brickley receive praise as leaders in Carlsbad. Brickley named vice president of the First National Bank and head of another bank in Carlsbad. Mrs Brickley cited as a top citizen for her service to the town.

Byron D. Lopp of the Department of Vocational Education in New Mexico met with the Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce after traveling from Silver City where he completed modern selling and personal development classes. He will speak before the Lions Club next Tuesday on boosting business for the state.
Paul H. Elmore, pastor, outlines Sunday School at 10 a.m. and preaching at 11 a.m. on The Importance of Evangelism. B T U at 6:30 p.m. with 7:30 p.m. preaching on The Seven Fools. Prayer services and choir practice Wednesday at 7:30.
Harry M. Payne 83, a pioneer of Virden died February 28 at his home after a stroke six weeks earlier. Born December 3, 1857 in Durhamshire England he came to the U. S. with his parents as a child and lived in Utah before moving to Mexico and settling in Virden during the Mormon Exodus. Survived by widow Ruth C. Payne ten sons five daughters and many grandchildren. Funeral held February 29 at the Virden Ward with a large turnout. His children include H. Vearle Payne state representative J. F. E. Payne bishop of Virden and former probate judge BEC Payne.
Mrs. Louise S. Pearson died February 2 1940 at Phoenix after a long illness. Born April 25 1856 in Truro Nova Scotia she married T Robert Pearson a prominent stockman who predeceased her in 1987. Survived by three grandchildren and distant relatives, funeral held at Lordsburg Methodist Church with Rev Bryan Hall officiating.
Bryan Hall pastor leads church school at 9 45 a m worship at 11 am with the sermon I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church Evening service at 7 30 pm with choir Also note H E Scofield and E Forrest Sanders drove to Silver City Tuesday to attend the opening of the spring term of the Grant County District Court docket.
The Fourth District Tournament begins at 8 a m today at Central School Gym New Mexico 1940 brings teams from Alamogordo Deming Hatch Las Cruces Cliff Virden Silver City Anthony Hurley Tularosa Animas Hachita Montecello Lordsburg with D N Julian and Jim Evans refereeing Myles Cohen Marshall Fuller FE M Fisher Jr and R R Lewis as scorekeepers Ferguson of Hatch heads the event Lordsburg hosts following a full day schedule culminating in semi finals Saturday with trophy presentation to champion teams and thanks to local businessmen supporting the tournament.
Lions Club held a lively noon meeting with President Taggart in the chair. Guests included R L Bowen of Community Public Service and George Johnson of Silver City, plus new banker BE Brickley who urged consideration of government and invention impacts on civilization. Water for summer softball was discussed and the Quarto Centennial publicity program noted. The grade school midget basketball tournament was praised for its success and organizers plan to host again next year.
Mrs FE DeMoss returns from Stanford with news her son Ed win recovered after an appendectomy and back in school. Mary Josephine Sjostrom and family moved into a new cottage near the university. Mrs L P Shinn learns her brother John Moore died in a San Antonio auto accident.
Sheriff John P. Cavin and his Posse returned from the Tucson Rodeo with honors. Cavin placed third in roping on Spaghetti, while a second place roper also rode the same horse. The group drew crowds at the parade and met stars Charles Starrett and Gary Cooper.
William Mathew Nard born June 0 1960 in Texas died in Lordsburg on Washingtons Birthday after a long illness. He rests in Mountain View cemetery with service by Rev Bryan Hall and funeral director Walter Mullins. He spent his youth in Llano County marrying Adelia Chapman in 1881, father of seven boys and five girls. He moved to New Mexico in 1920 and lived around Lordsburg. his wife and ten children were with him at death.
Mayor Ernest J. Short traveled to El Paso on Saturday to fetch his wife Mrs Short and their newborn daughter Ernestine Joy born at Southwestern General Hospital weighing six pounds in El Paso.
The Friday Luncheon Bridge Club gathered at Mrs. 8. E. Allen's home with attendees Mesdames R. E. Buvens Faye Clayton L. B. Robinson J. R. Poindexter Donald Johnson Frank Winters and Robert Prugie.
John Macfarlane Dorrance born Glasgow May 15 1879 died February 26 1940. He served in Cuba during the Spanish American War and stood guard at President McKinley’s bier. He lived in Akron California and Arizona before retiring due to ill health. He married Helen F Thompson on November 4 1914 in El Paso Texas. Survived by wife and sister Agnes Dorrance of Akron Ohio. Funeral at Church of Christ with minister Fr Tilden Lewis and a floral tribute from Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Burial in Mountain View cemetery on Ownby lot.
R L Bowen, president, flew from Fort Worth and after inspecting the Lordsburg plant, traveled to Silver City to meet District Manager George Johnson. He said the company’s condition is excellent and progress is going well.
Felipe Varga 26 was killed instantly when a rock from two feet above his head fell in a small prospect shaft at the Banner mine. He was married and his funeral was held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church Wednesday at four in the afternoon, with Rev. Joseph M. Garnet officiating.
Lordsburg hosted a highly successful tournament with Deming Virden Central Cliff Fierro Columbus Santa Rita and other schools fielding grade school and midget teams. Deming midgets defeated Virden midgets 46 to 22 while Lordsburg and Cliff midgets fell 30 to 18. Deming grade boys beat Cliff 92 to 6 and Lordshurg swept Columbus 97 to 2. Lordsburg midgets and Deming grade boys claimed runner up honors with Lordsburg defeating Deming 42 to 26 in the final. The event featured referees Benwood Field Alfredo Guzman and Martin Entrada and generated strong district wide praise.
District Judge George W. Hay convened in Lordsburg Hidalgo county for a Wednesday term. The court disposed of minor civil matters and one felony case involving Clarence D D Orr who passed checks to the Hidalgo Hotel and First National Bank. Sentenced to two to three years but suspended on repayment plans and good behavior. Orr handed to Federal authorities for impersonation charges in Colorado. Two divorces were heard with DA Joseph W. Hodges and court reporter Mary Steinberger present.
The family of Louise 8. Pearson thanks friends for the kind floral offerings and loving sympathy shown at the death and burial of their beloved grandmother and friend. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Parks Jr and family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pearce Parks, Mr. and Mrs. Fines Bradshaw, Mrs. K. L. Brown and families, L. J. Cox of Phoenix Arizona express appreciation.
A wholesale liquor truck, loaded with whiskey, vanished after the driver left the keys in the cab for coffee. Deputies traced the vehicle west and found it overturned five miles west of Lordsburg. Pat Kennedy, uninjured aside from minor cuts, was jailed in Deming awaiting justice.
Attorney Fredrick Sherman of Deming traveled to Lordsburg for a Tuesday visit noted in local activity.
