U S Senator Pete Domenici will visit Lordsburg on Thursday afternoon meeting county and city officials at the Cafetorium from 2 30 to 3 30 pm. An open session with the U S Wildlife Service ranchers farmers and interested residents follows from 3 30 to 4 30 pm at the Cafetorium.
Lordsburg City Council awarded Deming Flying Service the contract to operate Lordsburg Airport after executive session scoring 84 to 62 against Bedrock’s Jesse Stillman. The meeting covered CAP transition, jail services pact, and budget questions. Fireworks moratorium ahead of July 4. gas tax up two cents July 1 with distribution to city and state road funds. All Star District Meet July 13 19 needs volunteers, bleachers and lights assurances.
Mayor Clark Smith asking residents to voluntarily conserve water amid hot dry weather. Pumps 2,000,000 gallons per 36 hours strain aging infrastructure budget to replace pumps. Lordsburg High School football coach Travis Lee resigns to lead Silver City 3A team. He cites a tough choice after a strong five year run 5-4 in 1984 1-8-1 in 1985 12-2 in 1986 11-2 in 1987 and 9-2 in 1988. He thanks district officials, players, and community and says the move is about new challenges. His wife Peggy remains with Lordsburg schools.
City Superintendent Alex DeLaGarza reported a major ten inch water line leak and a downed well due to electrical problems. Emergency declared, water restored twelve hours later with repairs by Davis and Furry and rapid parts delivery. City plans long term water and gas line replacements with a yearly budgeted pace.
