Lordsburg to Start City Drug Testing Program

Mayor Clark Smith told the Lordsburg City Council on June 30 that a city employee drug testing program must begin. Tests will be required after accidents and for new hires, with records kept updated as directed by Smith and the Federal Government and the Gas Pipeline Division. The council approved a three year contract with Deming Flying Service to operate the Lordsburg Airport and to cooperate with the local Civil Air Patrol. Ed Clonts, president of Deming Flying Service, pledged collaboration with the CAP.

Domenici Visits Lordsburg to Address Landfill and Gray Ranch

Senator Pete Domenici visited Lordsburg to discuss Hidalgo County concerns over a proposed landfill and the Gray Ranch Animal National Wildlife Refuge. He urged equal treatment in waste issues, explained no decision on the ranch, and defended Fish and Wildlife Service personnel while acknowledging private property rights and foreign investment questions.

Speers Celebrate Seventy Years Of Marriage Thursday

Claude and Edna Speer marked their 70th wedding anniversary on July 6. Married in Henderson Texas in 1919 on a railroad platform by a Justice of the Peace known as Daddy Ward, they have a son Leon two grandsons Steven and Paul and five great grandchildren. The couple moved to Lordsburg June 6 1929 where Speer worked as a barber until about ten years ago and he thanks loyal customers for their support.

Housing Officials Attend Albuquerque Conference

Peggy Tavnton, executive director at Pyramid Village, reported to Lordsburg City Council on a June 18 to 21 Albuquerque conference. She outlined drug abuse issues in public housing, funds for building more homes, and council approval to explore additional housing. The council raised per diem for housing officials to 75 dollars for 24 hours and approved the annual operating budget and bills. The authority will advertise for a part time secretary.

City Corner: Wells improve as conservation efforts grow

Alex DeLaGarza reports wells are performing better as residents and city workers conserve water by watering in morning and evening hours. More than 20 calls about abuse were received by Mayor Smith. A foreman's meeting led to corrective action, with police and officials urging ongoing conservation and education.
