Everything ready for a kiddies rodeo at Lords fairgrounds under lights. The event starts at 6 o clock Saturday evening June 28 with eight events and prizes for winners. Open to girls under 16 and boys with parental consent. Sheriff Posse sponsors the show to ensure its success.
The Annual State Convention of the American Legion Auxiliary in Albuquerque saw State President Mrs. H. R. Sheritt unable to preside after an automobile accident. Mrs. W. F. Winters took charge, was elected first vice president, named Americana Chairman, and chosen delegate to the National Convention in New York City. Miss Mary Read represented Western Division in the National Presidential Warship contest and four nationwide finalists compete for a $600 prize. A resolution urged memorial aid if Read does not win the Central Scholarship and veterans’ eligibility rules.
Lordsburg Lions meet Tuesday evening at 7 at the Legion Hall for a semi pot luck to entertain Lionesses. The club furnishes meat and bread while members bring items per their cards. Officers for the coming year will be installed and a short program is planned.
The 19th session of the Grand Rainbow Assembly convened in Las Cruces last week with Miss Emma Lou Cahoon as Grand Worthy Advisor. Della Ruth Frear of Clovis was installed as Grand Worthy Advisor for the year, Margaret Richards named Grand Musician, and Arina Martin as Grand Page and Grand Representative. Attendees from Lordsburg included Mrs. P. M. Chase and several Misses. The 1953 Grand Assembly will be held in Clovis.
Charles Hoggett defeated Levi Bradberry in the Class B calf roping at the Lordsburg fairgrounds last Sunday evening. He must win two more contests to claim the belt buckle, with next Sunday's event July 6 against Pete Robinson of Virden. Lewis Garcia beat Bob Berger in Class A and will rope Ward Richins of Virden next. he must defend the buckle twice more to win. Contests begin at 8 PM at the fairgrounds.
Miss Catherine Carruthers, president of the Lordsburg unit, is named as delegate to the convention. The organization will hold its next annual meeting in Silver City.
A fatal auto accident occurred Friday on Red Rock road twelve miles north of Lordsburg. Fred Blalack, 63, lost control, the car overturned, he was ejected and severely injured. He died Monday at Hidalgo County Tar Hospital. Funeral services were held at Heather Funeral Home with L. P. Anson officiating. burial followed at Mountain View cemetery.
City conducts early spray campaign against mosquitoes and flies reporting a marked decrease in pests. Swarms around garbage storage have largely vanished, with a second spraying planned in coming days to target hatch. Local residents credit the effort for relief from bites after June rains. Spraying machinery and materials supplied by a Phoenix, Arizona company.
Newly elected officers of Robert Swan Post Number 30 of the American Legion were announced at the regular meeting June 16. Commander Ross Kindred leads with 1st Vice Commander Bob Williams and 2nd Vice Commander Scott. Service Officer Jack Morgan. Sergeant at Arms James Ragland. Finance Officer Ralph Clifford. Adjutant to be appointed later. post plans a scrap iron drive soon.
L B E Goodnight, from Crescent Oklahoma, joins Conder's Jewelry as watchmaker and jeweler. He has 30 years of experience and arrives with wife and three children Cheryl Ann six, Thomas Williams, and Larry Donnell twenty months. Former Conder's employee Paul Deyo also returns to Colebrook New Hampshire.
A district P T A Summer Institute was held last Friday in the Faculty Women's Lounge at New Mexico Western College. Lordsburg P T A members attended including Mrs. Tom Lockwood Mrs. Robert Harwood Mrs. Dora Smith Mrs. J W Cory Mrs. Lewis Jackson Mr and Mr Wesely Freeburg Rita Corbell Patsy Crouch. Freeburg led a panel on What Do High School Students Expect of High School P T A. Rita Corbell and Patsy Crouch represented Lordsburg High School. Mrs Freeburg reported on the Home and Family Life meeting in Las Cruces. Other state and national P T A workers spoke to the group for an instructive meeting.
The Lordsburg All Stars plan to face the California Cuties in a men’s softball game next Monday evening. Local managers expect a lively contest as the All Stars pursue revenge after a recent loss to the Iowa Ghosts, with lineups still being formed and camouflage outfits noted.
The Lordsburg Indians managed only five hits as Santa Rita piled up twelve, scoring 9 to 4 over nine innings. Morales pitched five solid innings for Santa Rita before Martinez took over. the Indians were held scoreless until the fifth.
Poco lost two league games breaking a five game winning streak. They were defeated by Rice Warren and Banner Mine while CPS strengthened their position by winning two and losing one to stay second. Rich's remained third with Banner Mine close behind after Banner Mine went two and did not lose.
