League standings show Powell Banner Ramirez and Bishop among top teams with 9 games left. Maxwell says league expenses of 50 dollars were approved by directors and N M Morrink vice president.
Robert Auxiliary Unit No. 30 of the American Legion sponsored a party for veterans at Fort Jnyard Veterans Hospital. The ladies provided bingo, toffee, ice cream, and home-made treats, a small gathering led by Connie Saucedo and Mary Martinson.
Dewey Mulford and his party arrived in Phoenix after an extended trip. He traveled with his mother Mrs. M and the Bow family, among others, returning Thursday to the Phoenix area.
The Hillger Oil Co. celebrated a grand opening Saturday at the Gila 66 and Yucca 66 stations with free gifts for customers. Phillips Petroleum personnel from Amarillo Roswell Albuquerque Tucson Phoenix El Paso and other cities attended along with Hillger Oil Co. reps led by Raymond Smith the local manager.
Ruth Bishop and Harriet returned Tuesday from San Diego where they visited Mr and Mrs Durand Dunn and toured Disneyland and Knott Berry Farm They also called on the Foster family in Lemon Grove en route home Mr Foster formerly worked at the local bank
The Southwestern Regional Library program, led from Silver City, will roll a red and gray bookmobile through Deming and nearby yards this Friday. Librarian Edward Werner directs operations with driver Bill Kirkland and staff Sandra Ray. Irene Peck administers the New Mexico Rural Library Program.
The Lordsburg school summer band program runs eight weeks with 133 students enrolled across Beginning Junior and Senior bands. Twelve seniors take private lessons. an outdoor concert is planned in July in front of the football stadium under lights. A separate jail fire endangers an inmate who allegedly set a mattress blaze in the county courthouse basement.
Ethel Slover named president of Coronado Auxiliary Unit No. 29 in Animas at a June 13 meeting at the Youngblood residence. Other officers include Margaret Dunagan, Retha Garcia, Ethel Youngblood, Tina Risk, Beulah Vaughan, Edith Ballard. Delegates named for the 37th Department of New Mexico convention in Artesia June 27–29. The unit sponsors a Cloverdale picnic grounds cleanup July 13 and invites help, with lunch provided. Coffee and cake were served after the meeting.
Esther Landreth of Lordsburg is among 27 students in a summer graduate workshop at North Texas State College focusing on improving typewriting instruction. The program, directed by Dr. Vernon V. Payne, includes six national education and business consultants. Landreth teaches at Lordsburg Municipal High School.
Kennecott Copper has scheduled a shutdown at the Chino Mines Division in Santa Rita and the Hurley reduction plant. The day shift will pause June 15 and resume June 30, with a return to full operation by July 1 plus a seven cent per hour wage increase for all day pay personnel. The current contract runs through June 30, 1959.
B B McAlister spent a week in Roswell and Portales returning Sunday afternoon. He provided transportation for Lordsburg and Rodeo boys to a Boy’s State encampment at Roswell and registered them at the Military Institute before visiting family in Portales. Delegates included Jim Culberson Eddie Avalos John Martinez Hipilitio Aquino and Bill Miller. The boys will share their Boy’s State experiences in the Liberal’s next issue.
Robby Gilmore of Deming is visiting his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Jeanes this week.
Three Southern Pacific train men from Tucson were hurt when a signal mix up caused a locomotive to push into cabooses on parallel tracks near Lordsburg depot. C H Sellers suffered a fractured ankle, Melvin Hardy a fractured rib and burns, James Ratliff a sprained back.
Lordsburg Elks Lodge No 1613 held Flag Day observances with a ceremony titled The Birthday of the Flag at the Elks Club. Attendees included Roddy Poindexter Douglas Strain Leon Speer Jack Hazelton J H Houser Dennis Kerr E M Fisher Jr J S Culberson with a ham dinner and music by Miss Jackie Galusha. Rex Maluy praised the event and Janet Anderson won bingo jackpot.
Mrs. Frank Clayton's daughter Debbie marked her tenth birthday on Sunday with a watch and other gifts.
