The Sun day $110,000 Kansas Futurity final at Ruidoso Downs features qualifiers from Alabama Missouri Colorado and California. California leads trials with Ruby Charge Four Forty Queen and Suleo's Rocket. New Mexico Colorado and Oklahoma also place in the field.
Nicho las T. Diaz and Francisco J. Estrada were commissioned second lieutenants after graduating from Officers Candidate School in Santa Fe. The pair, from a class of 34, completed a 54 week program, including 270 hours of college level military coursework and extensive field and physical training. Captain Jesus Estrada said both new officers will be assigned to the local battery. Sergio Ray Rodriguez and Sgt. Ramon Sanchez Jr. are members of a new class receiving officer training.
Jeanette Hitson daughter of Mr and Mrs Ed Hitson is one of five finalists for Music Camp Queen at Eastern New Mexico University a field of 20 nominated by 633 junior and senior high students. The winner will be crowned at the twilight concert this evening in the university gymnasium Judy Sledge Alamogordo 1964 queen will crown the new queen.
On Sunday June 13 BPOE Lodge No. 1813 held Flag Day ceremonies featuring a U S flag review led by V F W Post No 3099 with Junnell fanagan at the piano. A dinner followed and Lodge 1613 thanked the VFW post for its help making the event a success.
Senator Joseph M. Montoya seeks prompt hearings on S. 1034 to let rural towns build public utilities such as gas, water, and waste systems with loans and grants from the Farmers Home Administration. Co sponsors include seven Democratic colleagues and hearings depend on Agriculture Department input.
Theodore J. Henry of Lordsburg New Mexico has been chosen for the National Science Foundation Summer Institute in PSSC Physics at New Mexico State University. He is among 40 junior and senior high school teachers invited to eight weeks from June 14 to August. Henry teaches science at Lordsburg High School.
The American Legion named officers for 1965 66 including WwW Scott as commander Victor Lazar as vice commander Arnold Nard as chaplain Homer Brooks as adjutant Felix Jimmenez as sergeant at arms A D Black as finance officer H Bishop as service officer and Ray Saucedo as historian Delegates chosen for the State Convention at Santa Fe on July 29 1994 were W W Scott F G Behmiander Arnold Nard Homer Brooks Ray Saucedo and Jack Morgan.
Lordsburg student Tomy Shoon is among more than 209 UNM College of Arts and Sciences honorees for the 1964-65 second semester. Recipients posted a 3.0 or better grade average with 15 or more hours. Shoon carried 15 hours and averaged 3.0 to 3.49.
At a Friday meeting Stewart A. Hatch outlined Economic Opportunity Act programs for Hidalgo County. The group urged using parts of the act including summer and part time jobs for youths 16 to 21. A second meeting is set for 2:00 pm at City Hall to organize a Community Action Committee with broad public and private representation.
Lordsburg Lions Club elects new officers at a Ladies Night social hosted on the patio by retiring president Gilbert Bavens. Past district governor Bert E Newland will serve as installing officer. Two young members share experiences from the annual honor trip to northern Arizona following high school graduation, funded by W F Ritter Lambert Co and Ritter Walker Co for top eight seniors scholastically.
Driver Education begins Monday with teacher Joe M White in Room 20. Students must attend at 2:00 AM Monday for the first meeting and can earn half unit credit on completion. Initial focus is on classroom work before the driving schedule starts.
