Lordsburg Swim Team Seeks Members at Municipal Pool

Local swim team organized at Lordsburg Municipal Pool invites all ages to join. Regular meets planned in Lordsburg and surrounding communities with practice 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday led by coach Debbie Hood. Contact Ms. Hood for information.

Lordsburg Names Schimmel Public Relations Director

Councilman John Schimmel began work as the city's official public relations director at a $900 monthly rate. Mayor Ted White says Schimmel has not yet resigned from the council and will remain until the council acts. The next council meeting is set for July 6 to address Schimmel’s status and Harold Jorgenson’s absenteeism.

Animas School Board Delays Vacancy Appointment Again

The Animas School Board postponed filling the board vacancy for the third consecutive meeting after Len Judd resigned to take a promotion at Phelps Dodge. The panel delayed until all members could attend, as last Thursday’s session ended with the vacancy still unfilled.

Hidalgo County Business Patterns Report Details Local Firms

A Government study titled County Business Patterns shows Hidalgo County hosts 127 active firms with 83 employing four or fewer workers and 95 under 20. The report cites 990 Social Security covered workers and a 5.083 million dollar annual payroll, up from 3.544 million in 1973, reflecting rising wages and expanding payrolls despite unemployment. It also notes employment trends and references school personnel and local hiring actions amid district updates.

Fires Strikes Lordsburg in 72 Hours Demolish Travel Trailer

Lordsburg volunteers battled three fires from June 11 to June 13. An unoccupied East Lordsburg house burned for over 30 hours before containment after 3,600 gallons of water. A hay stack fire at Sher wood Culberson ranch was kept from nearby buildings. A travel trailer on Highway 90 was destroyed after crews used CO2 bottles until a third pumper arrived.

Fences Planned on Highway 90 in Hidalgo County

Hidalgo County Commissioners were told fencing on Highway 90 between Lordsburg and Silver City will start around July 5 1977. Allan Kerr county manager said the work will be through the Manpower Program and coordination noted with the Council of Governments the State Highway Department and the U S Forest Service. The panel also signed a lease with a Trust to operate Cotton City Airport under county control.
