Broad New Mexico Primary Results Across Counties

Democrat Jack Daniels carried 19 of 24 counties in the U.S. Senate primary, including Ijo Chaves Colfax and Dona Ana, by a 5,969 vote margin. Governor Mondragon won nine counties, while Domenici led in Mora Rio Arriba and other counties. House races saw Gallegos and Pankey win nominations as races set for November contention.

Price's Creamery Dominates VFL 10-0 in Little League Softball

Price's Creamery won 10-0 as Tony Rodriguez pitched a no hitter and Angel Ramirez Monte Morales and Chano Talavera homered. In other Friday games State Highway defeated Elks 10-2 as Joe Jaquez allowed two hits and homered. Saturday Animas slugged eight homers in a 12-2 win over Parker Insurance with Chuck Burton tossing a no hitter.

Elks Lodge Observes Flag Day in Lordsburg

The Lordsburg Elks Lodge held Flag Day ceremonies on Sunday June 11 with Exalted Ruler Charles McCullough opening the event. Charles Walters traced the flag’s history while VFW members led flag presentations and Dr James Latham Lordsburg High School principal delivered a keynote urging citizen responsibility and unity.

Gonzales Named to New Mexico Law Enforcement Board

Gov Bruce King reappointed Gallup Police Chief Manuel Gonzales to the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Board for four years. The term starts July 1 as his current term ends. Gonzales, 47, has led Gallup Police since 1955 and entered law enforcement in 1948. He is a Gallup native, married with four children.

Hidalgo Retirement Ranches nursing home eyed for July opening

A preliminary inspection on Wednesday for Hidalgo Retirement Ranches in Lordsburg included Hidalgo Area Development Corp. representatives, administrator Charles Brightup, Richard Snow from Clovis to supervise, architect Will Harris, contractor John C. Cornell, and sub-contractors. Carpeting is due soon as utilities installations begin, with plans for an open house and public inspection in mid July.

Kennecott Sues Over State Pollution Plans

Kennecott Copper Corp asks federal courts to uphold air pollution abatement plans for Nevada Utah New Mexico rejected by EPA. Three petitions seek review of EPA disapproval, with Kennecott contending plans meet air quality standards and the data supporting EPA action not yet public. Company plans to spend 130 million in states where it operates.

IMT Science Program Opens for 40 New Mexico Students

Forty New Mexico high school students from thirty towns will join the first session of the Summer Science Training Program at New Mexico Tech from June 12 to 30. The program, sponsored by the NM Academy of Science, covers chemistry physics biochemistry and the new biology with lab work and field trips to Langmuir Laboratory and the Lovelace Foundation. George Craig and Danny Hill of Lordsburg High School are among the participants.

Methodist WSCS Adopts United Methodist Women Name

The WSCS monthly meeting at Mrs. M. Messecar’s home, presided by Mrs. Regina Newton, approved a new name United Methodist Women reflecting the merger with the United Brothering Church. A new constitution was read and a Lordsburg October sale project discussed along with a publicity committee appointment.
