Lordsburg High School alumni gathered at Hotel 6 patio for a 1940 banquet with Mrs Clegg of Hidalgo Grill serving dinner. Governor Miles attended, praised Lordsburg’s growth and community spirit, and urged ongoing support as Jim Jones led the program and Edna Miles attended with her parents.
Allen, manager of Palace Theatre, announces the Coronado on East Second Street will begin soon. Plans show a 525 seat theater with clear sightlines, adobe and concrete construction, a northeast entrance, and decorative marquees, aiming to rival big city plays houses.
Mr and Mrs Tom Bleauvelt announce the birth of a son born Saturday at eight pounds. Both mother and child are progressing nicely. Mrs Bleauvelt is formerly Miss Ruby, and many friends extend congratulations.
Lowell Jones son of Mr and Mrs Elbert Jones after training at Lincoln Flying School in Nebraska and six months mechanics has secured a good position at the Douglas Airplane factory in Santa Monica California. President Donald Douglas has visited Lordsburg airport and aided his introduction to the company. A photo of Donald Douglas stands in the local gallery.
Lordsburg residents who have not been counted in the current census are urged to notify the Chamber of Commerce city clerk or the Lordsburg Liberal. An enumerator will visit to complete the tally. the Census Bureau seeks full enumeration and notes it is the resident’s responsibility to be counted.
Stephen Walter Birchfield has been notified by Columbia University that his credits are approved and he may enter Cumberland University Law School in Lebanon Tennessee. He will pursue the law program through to graduation and complete a regular law course.
FE A Anundsen and C A Simis of the United States Bureau of Mines were treated to a dinner at Hidalgo Grill after a first aid course and an inspection of Banner Mine operations. Allen Bowman hosted as superintendent Bowan was ill. Guests included office staff department heads and miners praised as first class by the Bureau experts.
Harlan Black secretary calls executive committee meeting at the courthouse on Friday June 14 at 1 PM. He also requests all department heads to attend with the executive board at that time.
Judge and Mrs. B. B. Ownby report a letter from Leon L. Myers president of the Christian Restoration Association. Myers will be in Lordsburg Tuesday evening June 18 to give an address at the Church of Christ. The public is warmly invited to attend.
The Lordsburg Church of the Nazarene thanks neighbors and local businesses for kindness and donations after a fire destroyed the parsonage and damaged the church. Services are listed for Sunday School 9 45 morning worship 11 00 junior society 7 00 evangelistic service 8 00 p m. The congregation plans remodeling and a new parsonage soon.
Mrs Lowell Jones leaves tomorrow for Venice California where her husband has a job at the Douglas air plane factory. She has served as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce with satisfactory work and will be replaced Monday by Miss Ernestine Huston a top student in the class of 1940 highly recommended by the superintendent and principal.
Mrs E M Brickley wife of the bank official will settle in a new Brickley home on South Main Street in a few days. Mr Brickley has managed the household this past week and will welcome a real housekeeper.
Mr and Mrs Keith Jameson of Middleburg West Virginia arrived June 8 to reside six months to a year for a healthier climate pure water and perpetual sunshine They live in the J H Clark apartment The note recalls Will Rogers remark that New Mexico can restore health if lost
Big Ben and Little Ben along with Chief Ben Robertson and Ben Robert son Jr and Chief Greenbaugh were in Cloverdale country this week for a short visit and sightseeing.
Governor and Mrs Miles and their daughter Edna arrived at Lordsburg airport aboard H L Harrison's plane. They were greeted by Mayor Ernest J Short and local residents. Mrs Miles and Edna were hosted at luncheon inside the Hidalgo Hotel while the Governor joined Mayor Short and local men. An afternoon reception in the Hidalgo Lounge honored the First Lady and Governor.
Mr. Walker Hubbard and five children from the Baptist Children’s Home in Portales will present a program at the Baptist Church on Tuesday night June 18. The public is cordially invited and will find the program interesting and instructive.
Banner Mine Company president H. J. Grimes and auditor A. H. Hardy visited last week to inspect the mine. Hardy Young piloted the plane during the short trip.
Stephen W. Birchfield reports in Kansas City that former coach and Mrs H G Ehrhardt welcomed a baby son. Friends in Lordsburg are glad for the Ehrhardt family though the name is not yet known.

The N and T Sewing Club gathered Tuesday at Mrs. George Trimble’s home. Members present included Ira Conner, Charles Fuller, A L Green, Nellie Holliday, W P Hill, Elbert Jones, P M McInnis, R B Ownby, F H Singer, Harry Scofield, and Joe Emanuel. Guests included Clay Fuller from Alabama Inez Boswell of Albuquerque and E M Fisher. Refreshments of fruit plate and iced tea were served.
A 73-vehicle convoy, mostly army trucks, stopped in Lordsburg for about an hour at noon Monday on the move from Fort Bliss to Fort Huachuca via Douglas and Lowell. Commanded by Lt. MG Banka with Lt. H. Waltera aboard, the group included 115 enlisted men from the quartermaster squadron at Huachuca.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Stengle honored their son Harvey’s tenth birthday with a June 7 gathering at home. After a buffet, guests attended a movie, with attendees including Hannah Mae Ewan Betty Robinson Eva Westover Dora Heath ey Walter Mullins Har ber Heather Erwin Ewan Johnnie Jones Florence Gwartney and Harvey. Party favors included pipe cleaner colored handkerchiefs for the girls and pocket combs for the boys.
Mr and Mrs Jim Robertson of Hatenita left Tuesday afternoon for Tucson and then Train to Long Beach for Mr Robertsons health. They were joined by Mrs Carter who will assist in his care.
A mountain picnic Sunday gathered Mary Louise Noce Gladys Gene Malone Mary Barra Mildred Swaggart Mary Frances Malone Florence Gwartney Nellie Jo Swaggart Gene Noce Carl Barra Myles Cohen Johnny Jones Rudd Mann Billy Kimbley and Oree Noce for a day of outdoor fellowship and food.
The Baptist Woman's Missionary Society will meet at the home of Mrs. Frank Corbell on Wednesday June 19. All members are urged to attend.
Judge Cav P. Duniton and Secretary Miss Margaret Sprunk traveled from Silver City on legal business Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Troupe celebrate their third wedding anniversary. Mrs. Troupe travels to Clayton, New Mexico for a family reunion and expects to be away about one month while Mr. Troupe remains as manager of the Up-To-Date Grocery department.
Mr and Mrs Jack Kerr of Los Angeles visited here for the Alumni banquet. His parents Mr and Mrs Earle Kerr of Santa Fe joined him with other friends including J Cloyd Miller and J Cloyd Hl from Deming John Bingaman and Maurice Conner of Silver City. They toured the Charles Fuller ranch and returned to Los Angeles Tuesday. Jack is chief advertising manager of Kerr Glass Can Company and has drawn notable ads.
A NM group of hatchery operators led by C B Gamble Mra Gamble Tucumcari Jack McCaw Artesia M I Pringle Deming A V Dettman Wagon Mound Sam Blair Albuquerque and C W Harkness Farmington attended a June 10 11 regional conference on the National Poultry Improvement Plan in Salt Lake City. E B BE Anderson accompanied them. The plan aims to standardize baby chick grades and improve poultry production through strict national state and local cooperation. Berley Winton and Paul S Zumbro of the USDA discussed administration progress and challenges.
J Farrar of Rodeo sails to Santa Barbara California for health reasons and plans to stay through most of the summer leaving this week.
The Methodist Missionary Society will meet on June 28 at Mrs. P M Chase’s home. Co hostesses are Mrs J F Stultz and Mrs James LaSalle will lead the lesson with Mrs Charles Fuller delivering the devotionals.
Mrs K D Haven Miss Peggy Porterfield and Mr Frank Fletcher traveled from Silver City on Thursday. Mrs Haven planned a California vacation while Mr Fletcher earned a B S degree as an OT C honor graduate.
From Fort Sill Oklahoma Mrs T RB Taggart and brother Lt R P Kent of Fort Sill and Miss Nancy Johns of Las Cruces spent the weekend at the Taggart home. They enjoyed a steak fry at Rustlers Park and a drive to the Wonderland of Rocks. Lt Kent is on leave after maneuvers in Louisiana.
Mr and Mrs L R Jones Sr depart for a two week trip to California starting in San Diego. They will drive along the Pacific Coast and likely visit the San Francisco exposition for the main destination.
Engineer BE Dunlap leads a crew at the Southwestern New Mexico Livestock and Fair grounds building adobe feeder pens for race horses. Foundations are cemented with caps, water piping installed, and planned lanes allow easy stock movement toward auction wings. About 40 000 adobes on hand with a total of 250 000 needed for the project.
The Valley View school board hosted the county board of education at Hidalgo Grill on Monday noon. Attendees included Mrs. Oma McCanta Mrs. W P Hill and Herff K Wood. County Superintendent Robert Mortenson chairman Leo Bates H L Scofield Mrs Eva Pendleton and others. The county board will not open a proposition affecting the Valley View territory at its July meeting.
Four New Mexico 4 H Club delegates Lillie Rae York Vernon Hall Helen Zartman and Billie Utton with chaperon G Ma Hatch travel by bus to Chicago New York City and Washington D C for the World Fair and a week at the 1940 4 H Club Camp The itinerary includes tours of the Washington Monument Lincoln Memorial Beltsville Farms Mount Vernon Library of Congress and other government sites with onward travel through Atlanta New Orleans and Houston returning home on June 19
Mr and Mrs Harlan Black hosted the TNT Club on Wednesday night with guests Mr and Mrs Luther Lacy Mr and Mrs Allan Bowman Mr and Mrs Weldon Eason and Mr and Mrs Jimmy Woods Refreshments included salad crackers and soda pop Mrs Bowman won the high prize and Mr Woods won the low prize.
Mr and Mrs Harold Scofield spent a few days in the middle of the week visiting El Paso.
The Chamber of Commerce reports that 14 training type airplanes will land Thursday morning at the local airport en route to Pacific Coast camps. The planes will be used to instruct high school and college students seeking flight training.

U Grant and Frank Bowman complete their junior year at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and enter summer vacation as honor students.
Mrs Hazel Lyons Parker daughter of Thomas F Lyons of San Antonio and Leland Anderson son of Mrs Lyons of Mexico City along with Mrs F A Anderson of Carvize Springs Texas spent a brief period at the Lyons home.
The F. T. Sewing Club met at Mrs. James LaSalle’s home on Wednesday. Attendees included Mesdames Joe Fimanuel Harlan Black Weldon Bason Luther Lacy J. H. Baxter Elbert Dorsey Bush and A. B. Bowman. Refreshments of sandwiches cakes and punch were served.
The Scissorette Sewing Club met Thursday at Annie Lee Ray’s home with Lena Mae Hindman as hostess. Attendees included Ada Mae Nard Verdie Brown Vera Craddock Mildred Sneed Laree Smith Alva Brown and Annie Lee Ray. Delightful refreshments were served to all.
Mrs. Charlie Fuller and Clay Puller arrive from Decatur Alabama to visit Clay Puller’s parents and Lordaburg friends. His mother had gone to Alabama a month ago and returned with them. Clay Puller plans to come out around July fourth for a visit.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Flowers of Minard Texas visiting Lordsburg friends were given an air ride by R H Harrison of Albuquerque who brought the governor's party to the city. Flowers is a prominent Texas cattleman.
Mrs Freeman McWhorter hosted the Wednesday Sewing Club at her ranch home. Attendees included Mesdams P M Chase and Harry Chase among others.
