Tammy Massey tops Animas High School Class of 1989 as valedictorian with a May 19 graduation address. She plans hospitality and tourism studies at New Mexico State University after four years of active involvement in FFA 4-H NHS Senior Class President and Student Council. Lisa Meloy is the salutatorian, active in sports and rodeo, who will study agri business at Texas Western College Snyder.

Burgess Explains Why He Won’t Join Suit Over Rules

New Mexico officials adopted landfill regulations on May 14. Eighty-five municipalities and counties joined a suit to block immediate implementation, citing lack of funding as the primary reason. Burgess lists reasons for not joining the action.

Lordsburg High Announces Summer Math Class Registration

Lordsburg High School will offer a free summer math class for students. Registration is Monday June 12 at 8 30 a m at the high school. Sessions run Monday to Friday June 12 to 23 from 9 00 to 12 00 and 1 00 to 4 00 for a total of 60 hours with a strict attendance limit of five hours absent or removal.

Judge Hazard Attends New Mexico Municipal League Meet

Judge Mary P. Hazard attended the New Mexico Municipal League General Legislature Committee in Albuquerque on June 3. The committee sets municipal policy and includes elected and appointed officials from across the state. County Commissioner Joe Burgess notes Hidalgo County did not join the suit for ethical concerns, fear of undermining regulations, cost borne by residents, and ongoing landfill obligations.

Lordsburg School Grounds Renovated and Bus Purchase Planned

Lordsburg school grounds receive a major revamp with asphalt basketball courts removed for cement resurfacing and landscaped play areas for safety. The School Board approved bidding for new home economics equipment and band instruments estimated around $10,000 while considering a shorter Bluebird activity bus to replace the 1978 model.

Methodists Oppose Landfill In New Mexico Vote

The New Mexico Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church adopted a resolution Thursday to oppose landfills from other states being placed in New Mexico. Submitted by Lordsburg United Methodist Church, it urged members to resist the imposition of refuse that would impose hardship and environmental hazards on New Mexico.

City crews review gas lines streets and water systems to set next year's budget. The council approved bills and granted Tony Hom permission to move his grandmother's trailer amid hardship after zoning committee approval.
