Lordsburg Eyes Natural Gas Boom and Franchise

The Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce gathers data on bringing natural gas to the community. Phelps-Dodge signs with Western Gas to supply Douglas, aiming for minimum 3 billion cubic feet per month at about 18 cents per thousand. The plan hinges on a merger with C. and A, with potential yearly savings around half a million. Southern Union Gas plans deliveries from the San Juan fields to Farmington Albuquerque Santa Fe and Las Vegas. Tucson currently pays 1.80 per unit, showing gas can greatly reduce fuel costs for small towns. The council may grant a franchise to the first acceptable natural gas contract.
