Native of Shakespeare Named Head Of Ladies Viiied Indian War Vets

Viola Ransom Wood, born June 1889 in Shakespeare area, was named national commander of United Indian War Veterans in corps at the group’s 32nd annual reunion in San Francisco May 11-12. She previously served on Gov. Mechem’s staff in 1954.

Womans Club Installs New Officers Monday

The Lordsburg Womans Club held its annual meeting at the Restaurant Monday evening May 31. Retiring president Mrs. Marshall Kuykendall reported on past accomplishments including raising one thousand dollars and redecorating the club house. Mrs Homer Brooks installed officers: Mrs Conradgers president, Mrs Vitor Lazar vice president, Mrs George Stone recording secretary, Mrs Frank Bowman defending secretary, Mrs Warren treasurer, and Mrs Kuykendall parliamentarian.

Changes in Handling Cotton Loans Announced for 1965

The 1965 crop sees ASCS county offices disburse all loans except those to approved cotton cooperatives. Loan clerks at banks buyers gins and warehouses may prepare documents while CCC loan drafts are issued for redemption. Custody stays with ASCS until maturity aiding faster redemption and reducing government costs.

Youth Steals Car Caught After Deming Roadblock

An escaped Ft Grant Arizona reformatory youth about 19 stole a car from Lordsburg Public Service plant. He led Deming police on a pursuit, ran a roadblock, and was shot in the legs while fleeing. He is hospitalized with non serious injuries. the right side of the car was damaged.

Dellon Cox Highlights 30th Soil Conservation Service Anniversary

Dellon Cox of the Soil Conservation Service spoke at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Range Cafe. He noted SCS was established by Congress on April 27 1965 to promote soil and water conservation through local districts and varied programs. He quoted Administrator D A Williams on SCS focusing on people land water and crops and outlined ongoing standards and local needs driven efforts.

V F W Meeting Elects Officers and Delegates

The VFW post 3099 held a regular May 27 meeting electing delegates for the 32nd Annual Department Convention to be held June 27 in Albuquerque New Mexico. Delegates named were James Kinkema Gene Noce Manuel Renteria Ernesto Renteria and Arturo Saucedo with alternates Frank Chaires Jr Carlos Saucedo Joe Esquivel and Martin Leyva. A district meeting in Deming will elect district officers on June 6 at 2 00 p.m. with a pot luck supper.

Lordsburg Approves City By-Pass Plan With Changes

The Lordsburg City Council, in a Wednesday special meeting, approved a by-pass using the northern route with reservations. Attendees included Robert De La Rue and Frank Tatseh. The plan calls for closer end interchanges and a rebuilt town road before opening, with cost estimates to the Bureau of Public Roads and a potential federal decision in about 30 days.

Gila Use Charges Delayed to July in NM Arizona Forests

The Land and Water Conservation Fund Act charges for the National Forests of New Mexico and Arizona will not start until July 1, 1965. Forest Supervisor R. C. Johnson cited administrative problems and urged early adoption of the recreation or conservation sticker before the new start date.
