MU Summer Band Jam Begins June 6

MU announces Summer Band Jam starting June 6 led by Brandt and the university band. Open to high school and university students with weekly Thursday rehearsals at 7 pm in the Pening Hall band room. Free to join for non credit, with a marching unit at Independence Day parade and a final concert at session end.

Silver City Invitational Golf Tournament Set for June

The Silver City Invitational in New Mexico runs June 3–5 at Scott Park Golf Course. It is a 54 hole stroke play event with no qualifying round and a championship flight open to amateurs. Entry fee is $20 including social events.

Senatorial Recount Begins In Hidalgo County Friday

The Hidalgo County canvassing board meets at 9 am Friday June 3 to start a recount of state senate votes. Senator I M Smalley filed for recount after Senator R H Wamel requested recounts in Sierra County. Sierra County plans recounts start June 6 with paper ballots used in 11 of 18 precincts.

Kennecott Mine Tours Begin June 13 at Hurley NM

Kennecott Copper Corporation announces summer plant tours of the mill and smelter in Hurley New Mexico from June 19 through August end. Open to visitors 14 and older, tours run Monday to Friday at 9 30 am, about two hours, starting at the Public Relations Office.

N M S U Students Receive Awards at Commencement

John Ernest Browning and Gerald Thygerson of Lordsburg were among about 700 graduates at New Mexico State University’s annual commencement on Saturday May 28. Governor Jack M Campbell delivered the address at the Memorial Stadium exercises. Browning earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a major in agricultural business. Thygerson received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a major in range science and is a member of Alpha Zeta agrarian honor society. He is the son of Antone Thygerson of Duncan Arizona.

Grass Fire Northwest of Hachita Spreads 300 Acres

Las Cruces District BLM crews fought a grass fire about 2 miles northwest of Hachita on the Donaldson allotment Friday night May 27. Clem Donaldson reported the blaze. Local wind abatement rancher and county road support helped mop up. Cause undetermined as thunderheads and light rain cooled the area.

Veterans' Service Officer To Visit Lordsburg

Jose M. Salas, service officer for the New Mexico Veterans' Service Commission, will be in Lordsburg on Friday June 10 1966. Veterans or dependents may contact him at the Welfare Office 210 E 2nd Street from 9 am to 4 30 pm for assistance with veterans affairs.
