A historical reminiscence recounts Shakespeare camp near Lordsburg New Mexico in the 1870s. George W. P. Hunt later Arizona governor appears among miners and saloon life. The narrative covers mining ventures gambling boxing ruses and a staged April Fool shootout at the store.
The City Council adjourns to a Board of Directors meeting of the Chamber of Commerce at eight o clock in the same room. The association covers the Southwest from Midland Texas to Hot Springs New Mexico and Chihuahua Mexico with about 50 cities. Lordsburg dues are 13.50 for 2700 population. The next meeting will be in Hot Springs June 24 and Lordsburg should be represented. Mayor Short serves on a key committee and Secretary Holt is a New Mexico director. All directors and members are urged to attend the June 7 council chamber gathering.

Miss June Clegg left Saturday to spend the summer with her aunt Mrs C A Martin in Tulsa Oklahoma and her grandmother Mrs G Shepherd in Eureka Kansas. She will return in time for school in September.
Attorney FE Mitchell former associate of A W Morningstar now LAPD official was met by old friends on a Saturday afternoon rail passage. Group included Point master Eugene Montague Dr B J Egan and son Ronald Dr B Austin and Willard Holt. He travels to Washington on official business.
It is expected that by September 1, 1939 free text books will be in the hands of all high schools in the state. Grade schools up to eighth grade will also receive free texts starting this September. Books will be provided in Music Art Penmanship and Social Science.
A 30 piece municipal band directed by Prof. W. C. Mearns will perform for three days at the Silver City rodeo next month. The article praises their performance with a playful question about their playing ability.
The Alumni banquet and dance at the Methodist church undercroft featured Marshall Fuller as toastmaster and Hughie Sullivan delivering the welcome. Officers elected: Fuller president, Mrs Hazel Sullivan vice president, Johnnie Jones secretary, Mrs Nora Conner treasurer. The Dusky Stevaders of El Paso provided music and a late floor show.
An Arizona party traveling to Dallas crashed a car into a cement culvert near Pecos. Dorothy Lyall 12 and Norris Diffie 10 freed occupants. Raymond Lyall 9 died from burns. Mrs Lyall and others injured evacuated to Pecos then Bisbee. Funeral held at Heathers with Rev Moore. burial Mountain View.
The Christian Endeavor contest funds close next Sunday with Live-wires 3226 and Go-getters 2925 in a close race. Fifteen present at a party and new members urged to attend. Bible drill on lying shows a liar cannot be saved. Next Sunday topics include How shall We Act in a Religious Service during various service parts. Also Bible School and church address memorized verses.
W. E. Brittain and wife formerly of Pittsburgh now in Tucson drove over Friday to visit J. L. Augustine, a mining era acquaintance. Brittain previously lived in Lordsburg around 1904 and he and Augustine hobnobbed in mining before either was married.
The 10 40 parade on East Railroad Avenue led by the drum and bugle corps directed by W C Mearna and Miss Barbara Payne moved to Mountain View cemetery for Decoration Day services. About 40 graves in Hidalgo county were decorated, including Robert Swan’s grave, with a poppy placed by Claude F Sanders. Hon Tryan Hall delivered the address praising veterans, followed by Rev Hollalo’s benediction.
Harry Rosenstein, returning from Los Angeles, learns of his father’s death in Tucson. The elder Rosenstein, a respected merchant, aged eighty, had divided his time between California and Lordsburg and was highly regarded in Lordsburg, El Paso, and Los Angeles communities.
Mrs Claude Fuller presents two evenings of music and readings with Nadine Farrar Carolyn Atkinson Annabeth Ewing Henry Fuller Jr and F W Corbell as soloists. The audience applauded generously as Lordaburg's young talents display notable training and promising stage presence.
Miss Naomi Wood earned the outstanding student in music honor and won the music medal at Abilene Christian College. Mrs. E J Wood Miss Ruth Wood and Miss Mildred Conner drove to El Paso to bring Naomi home.
George P. Jeffus drove to Gallup to visit his daughter Mrs. John Waldorp and family. On the return to Lordsburg he was accompanied by Mrs. Waldorp and daughter Alice Arah.
Palace Theatre unveils a June lineup featuring Spencer Tracy and Joan Crawford in Mannequin, Walter Huston and James Stewart in Of Human Bondage, Olivia de Havilland and George Brent in Gold Is Where You Find It, and more. Also showing are Bogart in Swing Your Lady, Hepburn and Garland era numbers, Frank Morgan in Paradise for Three, Gene Autry in Springtime in the Rockies, and Chan at Monte Carlo with Warner Oland.
Hoy Scouts report vigorous efforts to muster new members for operation No. 121. Meeting night moved from Monday to Tuesday. Several plans laid for the summer months.
Mr and Mrs Glen Moses Mr and Mrs Robert Pierce and Mr and Mrs Harold Scofield spent a week on a fishing trip to Willow Creek. Reports say the fish were biting on schedule and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
Royall Scott, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Scott, is noted for intensive study in art with emphasis on wood carving. He is currently in a Phoenix art school and plans to attend an art institute in Mexico City.
Miss Winnifred Laham spent the weekend as house guest of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Seofield.
