The Observation Post reports a carload of youths aged 14 to 17 died in a highway collision after pulling onto the main road from a side wad. Investigators note beer bottles found at the scene, with patrolmen saying liquor may have been involved though none admitted drinking. The piece urges adults to avoid drunk driving and criticizes out-of-town shopping that harms local economy.
The Lordsburg Schools summer band program begins June 5 with Beginning Band reporting at 1 PM, Junior Band at 2 PM, and Senior Band at 3 PM. Classes run weekdays with varying schedules. 22 Beginning, 15 Junior, and 34 Senior Band students enrolled. registration closes for Beginning on Monday afternoon.
Julio Ortega Jr was charged in Police Judge C L Brown s court with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor reckless driving and failure to stop for a stop sign He pleaded guilty to reckless driving and failure to stop officials moved to dismiss the other charge Brown fined him 25 and 5 respectively A separate charge of driving with a revoked license was bound over to district court in 200 bond after a not guilty plea Joseph T Clifton faced multiple charges including DUI speeding and resisting arrest all dismissed on city attorney s motion He pleaded guilty to assaulting Officer Rudy Lara and was fined 10 and bound over to district court on the revoked license charge
Five Lordsburg High School juniors Arturo Gandara Roland Williams Paul Huna Spencer Payne and Richard Adkinson will attend the 1961 Boy's State session at New Mexico Military Institute Roswell June 4 to 10. Sponsors include Church of Jesus Christ Latter day Saints Moctezuma Lions Elks 1813 and Robert Swan Post 30 American Legion.
Judge H Verle Payne announces Jesus Estrada appointed deputy probation officer to fill vacancy after Lalo Sanchez resignation in the probation department.
At a special meeting the council approved Engineer William S. Matotan's street improvement plan. Existing cracks will be repaired and sealed. damaged intersections receive extensive repairs. unpaved streets get cement-mixed asphalt with inverted crown, no curb and gutter. Bids will be sought. Ordinance No. 197 raises water rates for official buildings to 25 dollars minimum. County jail use fees rise from 35 to 50 dollars per month.
Sponsors and managers of Littl League and Pony League teams are urged to attend the final pre season meeting at City Hall Friday night at 8 p m. Supervisor Clyde Pace stresses urgency and asks for written permanent roster lists and registration certificates.
A Senior Life Saving course will be offered at the Municipal pool starting Tuesday June 6 at 9 m. Eligible are those who have passed their sixteenth birthday or are in or above the eleventh grade. Contact Gary Corbell at the pool or his home 542 3446 to arrange enrollment. The course requires at least 15 class hours with 2 extra hours for the final exam, totaling 17 hours.

Six Little League and four Pony League teams join the Lordsburg program starting Monday June 5. Teams include Elks, Moore, Aguilar, Banner Mine, Great States, Millican, and Valley Boll Weevils with sponsors and managers listed. Pony League games run at 8 45 p m with matchups featuring CPS LULAC Sheriff Weevils and Weevils.
