Karen McDonald Is Promoted At Western Bank

Western Bank announces on July 20 that Karen McDonald was promoted to Assistant Vice President. She supervises bookkeeping proof and tellers, grew up in Lordsburg, joined the bank in 1981, left in 1988, moved to Washington, then returned in 1991 and has worked there since.

Highway 90 closures announced near Lordsburg Silver City

Hidalgo County Sheriff reports daily Highway 90 closures between Lordsburg and Silver City from Thursday July 29, 1 PM to 3 PM, continuing until further notice. Also notes a school dress code meeting and county commission executive session on Treasurer's Office, followed by a death notice for Juan R. Lopez of Lordsburg with memorial planned at St. Joseph's Church.

LULAC Plans Hispanic Heritage Day Celebration

The Lordsburg LULAC Council schedules a three day Hispanic Heritage Day on October 1 2 and 3 with queen candidates Tabitha N Diaz Jennifer Diaz and Narciso Lucero plus fundraisers through September 26. Winners earn 20 percent of earnings for scholarships as a car show parade food and dance events unfold at the county fair.

Memorial service held Tuesday for former LHS teacher Louise Rankin

Louise Rankin, 87, died July 22 at Sunshine Nursing Home after a long nursing home stay. Born in a Jones County Texas ranch to Lewis and Lizzie Rankin, she taught in Texas before moving to Lordsburg where she lived 50 years and taught at Lordsburg High School for 26. A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church of Lordsburg on Tuesday at 4:00 PM. Cremation followed at Baca's Funeral Home, ashes scattered in the nearby mountains. She is survived by her brother William Rankin a nephew Carl Rankin and friend Katherine Smith.

Geronimo film crews stage Portal footage this week

A portion of the Geronimo biopic is being shot in Portal Arizona this week with most unit staying in Lordsburg. Cast includes Ryan Black Joseph Running Fox and Jimmy Herman portraying Geronimo at different life stages and August Shellenberg as Cochise. Norman Jewison and Chris Cook produce for Gila Productions U. S. with director Roger Young and writer J T Allen. Apache consultants assist on set.

City Replacing 940 Feet Of Gas Line In Lordsburg

Lordsburg to replace about 940 feet of Main Street gas line from Exit 22 to the old Sonic building in late September 1993.
