Lordsburg postmaster Donald McGhee received a letter from the Post Office Department notifying him his postmaster position is terminated at a date to be advised. The reason cited was failure to follow instructions. This is the second notice this year. an earlier order was rescinded after an appeal to the Postmaster General. An appeal is filed with the U S Civil Service Commission. McGhee remains on duty until a termination date is set. McGhee, a Republican, was appointed in March 1959 during the Eisenhower administration.
The New Mexico School Bus Drivers Association plans a 1965 institute on the Western New Mexico University campus starting August 26. About 1,000 drivers and families expected. activities include assemblies, classes, a roader, dance, barbecue, and an awards session. Bob Porter leads the executive committee. Co B Lemon directs final plans.
Victor Reay local manager of Community Public Service Co. came home Monday from Silver City where he underwent major surgery on July 21. He is convalescing at home and expects to resume partial duties next week.
The Medical Assistance to the Aged program extends to all counties under Kerr Mills provisions. It provides limited financial aid for hospital and prescribed medical costs to seniors 65 plus with income under 1500 yearly, plus $500 per dependent, not covering doctors or therapy. assets limits apply and transfers disqualify.
S Virgil Jones, game conservation officer, announced licenses for elk antelope and sheep and a general elk season are available from vendors and game officers. He noted bull frog season begins August 1 and fishing licenses required for anyone 16 or older. Frogs may be taken by hook and line spear gig grappling or bow and arrow.
St Josephs Catholic Church invites the public to an open house Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. to view the new building complex on Second Street and Chester. Rev. Daniel Alderette and the parishioners extend the invitation to area residents.
The State Highway Department will hold a public hearing at 8 p.m. on Wednesday August 4 in Lordsburg High School Auditorium to discuss a proposed 98 mile Interstate 10 extension from the current four lane west of Lordsburg to near the El Paso Natural Gas Co pumping station including the Lordsburg by-pass. Engineer B L Smith will lead the session with planning director H S Wiley presenting studies. a U S Bureau of Public Roads representative will attend. Chief Highway Engineer ToB White urges area residents to participate.
