Gunshot Victim Recovering After Rural Accident

Richard Fortenberry, 65, is reported recovering at Hidalgo General Hospital from an accidental gunshot wound sustained Thursday near Bedrock. He reached for a .22 rifle in his pickup when the barrel discharged, striking him near the chest. Deputy Sheriff Tony Moreno and Game Officer S Virgil Jones investigated.

National Guard Unit Prepares for Two Weeks at Fort Bliss

Battery C of the 200th Artillery will depart Sunday by motor convoy for two weeks of field training at Dona Ana Range Fort Bliss Texas under Captain Jesus Estrada. Lordsburg High School to Sell Season Football Tickets

Lordsburg High School will put season tickets on sale for five home football games. Coach Joe M. White announced the sale date on Monday and released the complete home schedule.

Lordsburg High Sets August Registration and Campus Dates

Lordsburg High School released a detailed calendar with registration slots from August 11 to 20 for freshmen through seniors and a series of preterm activities. It lists football physicals, faculty workshops, band practice, and opening assembly, plus holidays including Labor Day Hidalgo County Fair and NM E A convention. Superintendent Wesley Freeburg notes the term requires 180 teaching days.

Two Motorists Caught In Flooded Canyon Near Lordsburg

Mrs. John Newsom and Travis Waters had a close escape Sunday evening on the road from Redrock to Lordsburg after a sudden flood forced both cars into a canyon. Newsom sought treatment Tuesday at Hidalgo General Hospital for after effects of the ordeal.

Lordsburg Bypass Hearing Outlines 9.8 Mile Route

New Mexico Highway Dept held a public hearing in Lordsburg on a proposed 9.8 mile bypass. Interchanges planned at El Paso Natural Gas entrance Main and Short streets and near the Elks Club with a grade separation on Animas Ave. Estimated right of way costs favor southern routing but both routes priced. Construction could start about three years after Bureau of Public Roads approval in roughly three months.

Bowman Dies in Tucson Hospital After Illness

Ernest Snyder Bowman 41 a former Lordsburg resident died Monday evening at Tucson Medical Center after a two month illness. Services were held Thursday in Tucson. He started Banner Mining Co. south of Lordsburg in 1935 and led the firm as president until 1958 when he became chairman. Born December 10 1884 in Park City Utah he graduated from the University of Utah in 1908 and worked at Ophir Utah before moving to Lordsburg. He is survived by Olive B Bowman his wife four sons Allan E Creighton Frank and Grant four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

TV Cable System Adding New Channels

The City TV Cable Co. will add two channels to its service. NBC channel 4 from Tucson will appear on channel 2, and KTSM-FM radio will be on channel 5. Antennas for the Tucson and El Paso channels have been relocated for stronger signals.

Lordsburg Police Dept Seeks Patrolman Applicants

The Lordsburg Police Department is accepting applications for the patrolman position to fill a vacancy. Applicants must be 25 to 45 years old, at least 5 feet 8 inches tall, have a high school education, be physically fit and of good moral character and background.
