Phoenix Company Is Low Bidder on New City Water Tank

The Consolidated Western Steel Company of Phoenix Arizona was the lowest bidder at 14950.00 for a 300000 gallon water storage tank to be erected in Southwest Lordsburg. Other bids ranged up to 22650.00 from American Pipe and Steel Co of California. Pipe line bids to connect to the current system have not yet been opened.

Temperature readings from Southern Pacific Railroad

Daily high and low temperatures recorded at the Southern Pacific Railroad station. Entries show July 22 to July 28 with highs ranging from the mid 80s to high 90s and lows in the 60s. Some dates appear corrupted but include 86 to 97 degree highs and 62 to 65 degree lows.

Car Count Up At Port of Entry

Officer Jack Summers reports the 24 hour count for Sunday July 24 was 390 cars carrying 733 passengers an increase of 40 cars from the prior period. The tally also showed 102 trucks and buses with 290 passengers. Only out of state cars entering New Mexico are counted.

Selective Service Board Reorganized for Four Counties

Hidalgo Grant Luna and Catron counties will share one clerk for the selective service board. The board members remain unpaid. Mr Carpenter of Silver City will become the new clerk in charge of the four counties main office in Silver City.

Chamber seeks Old Timers Association for Hidalgo County

Chamber of Commerce efforts to form an Old Timers Association for Hidalgo County attract limited response. A Cloverdale picnic barbecue on August 13th will host the attempt and representatives will assist. Members urged to express interest and attend. Lordsburg folders about the Southwest will be mailed this week.

Bryant Reports To Lions At New York Meeting

Past President H. H. Bryant presented a report on his Lions International trip in New York City. The regular Lions Club meeting at the Westerner Cafe adjourned for summer vacation and will resume in September.

Oxsheers Celebrate Golden Wedding in Lordsburg

Mr and Mrs W E Oxsheer marked their Golden Wedding anniversary quietly in Lordsburg after fifteen years in town. They wed July 27 1899 in Nacogdoches Texas and held their first home in Joaquin Texas where he worked for the H B & W T Ry. He later served as ticket clerk for several lines and four terms in the Arizona Legislature. Mrs Oxsheer Gertrude active with YWCA and EWCA work in Bisbee before long career as secretary.

Mrs. Toribia G. Mendoze of Rodeo New Mexico died Thursday July 26 at Rodeo. Born April 11 1900 in Chushua wa Mexico she lived in Rodeo 24 years. She was survived only by her husband Jose Mendoze. Funeral was held at 9 am Thursday in Rodeo.

The local lodge has received working plans and blueprints for the new Masonic Building. After Grand Lodge approval several weeks ago the building committee now prepares for construction with the finalized plans in hand.

Teen Age Dance Planned by American Legion

The American Legion sponsors a Teen Age Dance at the Legion Hall this Saturday night July 30 at 8 30. Admission is twenty five cents with pop and sandwiches. Chaperons include Mertice Brooks Edith White and Moselle Messecar. Auxiliary members voted to sponsor more teen dances with Grace Wright Emaline Richards and Moselle Messecar as organizers.

Boxing recap reveals four bouts missing from last week’s coverage. Lightweight Frankie Zamaripa defeated John Dunlap on a 135 to 140 pound mismatch in Tucson.
