Benefit day on Saturday July 29 supports Leon Evans. Community event organized to raise funds with activities and local participation aimed at aiding Evans in his time of need.
Mayor Clark Smith presented the yearly gas distribution report covering July 12, with a July 20 council session. The Division sought a leak survey starting 1989 and annually thereafter. The city will replace gas lines with polyethylene pipe starting August and train staff in emergency procedures semi annually. SP Well is operational. water samples will be sent to Las Cruces and Albuquerque for testing. Council authorized a $4100 purchase for a back-up pump at the Booster Station. Pothole repair and oil spray on Marble Street will begin next week, at a total street project cost around $4500. Public zoning requests from Bob Raley and Norman Ribble are under study. Mayor approved advertising for one police officer, a new police car, and two gas and water department trucks. Bill approved. minutes tabled for next meeting. Next City Council meeting set for July 27 at 6:00. public encouraged to attend.
The 1989 Hidalgo County Fair Queen and court will be selected August 10 at 7 30 p m. Queens are 16 to 21, princesses from 13 to 15 10 to 12 and 6 to 9, with Little Miss Hidalgo County from ages 3 to 5. Contestants judged on personality poise and Hidalgo County knowledge plus Western outfit and Sunday Best. Entry blanks from local merchants and Extension Office. contact Sid Elliot at 436 2702.
The Lordsburg School System offers summer band instruction for students. On Tuesday August 1 seventh graders and older pupils may attend at DTMS between 1 00 pm and 3 00 pm to obtain or try instruments. Regular classes resume Wednesday August 2 with schedule 1 00 pm for sixth grade 2 00 pm for sixth grade and 3 00 pm for seventh and eighth grades. High school band students new to marching should report to the high school band room at 7 00 pm on August 8.
The Lordsburg School Board will meet in regular session Tuesday August 1 at 7 30 p m in the Board Room. The public is invited to attend.
Grant County Judge Y B Morales sentences 21 year old Joe Escobar of 1448 S Student Athletes to counts including arson and burglary. The case involves burning a home at 1400 S Animal St with liquid accelerant, $40 000 insured damage, and multiple drug trafficking and property crimes. Escobar also faces a three year total sentence with a two year parole term.
At about 8:00 p.m. a local officer prevented a possible suicide by disarming a woman who then brandished a gun. The suspect, not a local citizen, was taken to Gila Regional Medical Health Center after Border Area Mental Health Services were alerted. Police Chief El Cramer praised the officer's bravery. Separately, Virginia police reported a stolen vehicle case with two adults and one juvenile taken into custody. extradition issues led to releases for the adults. The juvenile remains in custody awaiting his mother’s arrival.
Levi DeWitt McDaniel 80 of Lordsburg died July 22 at Gila Regional Hospital in Silver City. Visitation July 23 from 3 to 6 pm at Bacas Heather Funeral Chapel and service July 24 at 10 am officiated by Rev. Jesse Liles. Interment Mountain View Cemetery. Survivors include wife Idahlie two sons Leroy and Leon four daughters Jean Betty Anita a brother and three sisters plus 18 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Bacas Heather Funeral Chapels in charge.
Richard Taylor chosen as Lordsburg High School head football coach succeeding Travis Lee. He arrives from Hamilton College in Clinton New York where he served as offensive backfield coach last season. Taylor, born in Bay City Michigan, holds a masters from South Dakota State University and begun teaching in 1976.
Elna Pace former Lordsburg sheriff dies in Tucson at age 99. Born July 30 1905 in Colonial Diaz Mexico, she moved to Virden NM in 1912 then Lordsburg with husband Hugh Pace. Survived by four children including Vanita Hatch and Cliff Pace. County bids base road work for Playas Road open Sept 6. 10.3 miles with 26 miles fencing underway, completion in about 30 days per County Manager Tom Anderson.
