Fire sparked grass blaze near Lordsburg Thompson Canyon
Smoke visible Wednesday morning stemmed from a lightning caused grass fire in Thompson Canyon about 10 miles north of Lordsburg, near the Hidalgo County line. Hidalgo County Fire Department crews, Forest Rangers, and slurry planes continued battling the flames late Wednesday evening.

Jailbreak thwarted by deputies in Hidalgo County jail
A partially excavated cinder block was found in a jail cell during a Friday random inspection on July 7. A prisoner used a broken glass shield, a mop part and steel bars to dig mortar from the block. deputies named in the report include Virgel Mayberry Jack Staples John McDonald and Ed Kessler.

Vehicle Crash Statistics Released June Fatalities and Trends
The State Highway and Transportation Department released June and year to date fatal motor vehicle crash statistics. There were 37 deaths in June and 219 fatal crashes year to date with 247 fatalities. Most victims were New Mexico residents on rural roads. 57 percent of fatalities involved alcohol. 79 percent of car occupants were unbelted. 64 percent of motorcyclists wore helmets. ages 13 17 and 55 or older each accounted for 17 percent. No immunization clinic on July 26. next clinic August 9.

Hidalgo County Commissioners approved bids for Playas Road and Glen Acres Road projects with state and county funding totaling over 1.0 million dollars. U S Congressman Joe Skeen will visit Lordsburg on August 22 for a two part meeting at the Lordsburg Cafetorium with a 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. landfill discussion and 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. open forum.
