Bensley Aims for Gold at 1984 Summer Olympics

Todd Bensley, a Lordsburg native, prepares for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He competes Monday in the Running Game Target slow target event, facing a 164.04 foot distant moving boat target and a possible 300 point perfect score after four 300s in practice. The fast target event follows on Tuesday with the same distance but half the visibility time.

Pledges For Bensley Pass Halfway Mark

The Olympic Committee backed by Lordsburg City Hidalgo County and the Chamber of Commerce vies to reach a 5000 dollar goal for Lordsburg Olympian Todd Bensley. Funds rely on Fourth of July booths swim night proceeds a rummage sale Sonic Drive-In takings and a Toga Party. Final drives include Coronado Theatre door receipts and four showings of Purple Hearts this weekend. A pool tournament and tardeada at Elks Lodge Saturday and Sunday plus a 6:30 hot air balloon rally start Todd Beasley Day events with balloons traveling from the Southwest. Propane donated by Dockum for balloonists.

Two More Businesses Dot Local Landscape

Lordsburg Saddlery moved to the corner of 4th Street and Main in late November 1983. Previously on Cattle Rest Road the merchandise was enlarged with the move. Owned and operated by Harvey and Nora Lang of Lordsburg, store hours begin at 10:30 Monday through Saturday. Items include western wear leather goods craft gifts and some jewelry. Lang partners with his dad and brother in Triple L Drilling Service which sells electric big killers TRC oil products Ferrier equipment and is a drop for Gila Boot and Shoe Repair. Spirit Metal Products and the Better Half Tee Shirt Shop at 909 Animal Street is owned by Rod and Sunnie Jones offering metal craft and apparel. Rod runs a small nonferrous foundry and machine shop while Sunnie handles front end decalled apparel.

Howard “Mac” McPhearson, 81, Dies in Silver City

Howard C. McPhearson, known as Mac, died Sunday July 22 at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City. A Lordsburg resident since 1959, he worked as a bartender and cook at various places and most recently at Jasso's Shell. Funeral services were held July 26 in Heather Chapel with burial at Shakespeare Cemetery. Pallbearers included Sims Bowers, Gene Noce, Robert Reynolds, Leon McDaniel, Rene Saucedo and Bilo Fisher. honorary pallbearers were Joan Lopez, Cassie Martinez and Wayne Banter. He is survived by many friends in Lordsburg.

Hospital Architects Hired By John Schimmel

Hidalgo County Commissioners in a short special session awarded the hospital renovation contract to Abeles, Pfeffer and Associates for 10000 dollars. Other bids were Claudio Antonio and Associates at 13000 and Robert L. Torres and Associates at 14800. Evaluation factors included technical approach, work plan, personnel experience, corporate experience, local context familiarity, and cost.

Council OKs Budget For Soap Box Derby

The City Council in a July 24 special session approved the Third Annual Soap Box Derby budget totaling 615 for trophies ribbons flowers and advertising. Heidi Anderson requested lodger tax funding and use of Short Park field house for October 6-7 events with a platform for dances and a scaffold for announcer Art Malott. The council also considered Senior Citizen health insurance options and noted a Class of ’78 gathering at Nugget Lounge for July 26, with feasibility concerns raised on insurance participation.

Gazebo Arrival For North Park In Lordsburg

The Hidalgo County Government has purchased a gazebo for North Park in Lordsburg. City Engineer David Chavez will oversee the project aiming for completion before St. Joseph's Church bazaar on August 11. Citizens may volunteer by contacting City Hall.

Services Held In Virden For Judge Payne

The Honorable H Vearle Payne aged 75 died Friday July 20 in Albuquerque after an illness. He is survived by his wife Mandona six sons Verne Payne Spencer Payne and wives Verda JoNeel all of Albuquerque Lloyd Payne and wife Carolyn of Animas James Payne and wife Patricia of Farmington John Payne and wife Nyla of Duncan and Roger Payne and wife Louise of Kirtland a daughter in law Lynette Payne of Albuquerque 58 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Memorial services were held 10 00 a m Monday at the 6th Ward LDS Church in Albuquerque Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Virden Ward LDS Church in Virden at 11 00 a m Burial was at Virden Cemetery Final arrangements by Heather Mortuary.
