Mr and Mrs Fausto Noce and the Damon Dunagan family returned from Albuquerque where they attended the national convention of the Prisoners of War. Of the 4000 original prisoners only about 400 are now living. Fausto and Damon were members of the New Mexico National Guard who were in the Philippines when the Japanese took the island.
Twenty one 4 H members five leaders three parents and two agents traveled by bus from Hidalgo County to Socorro for District 10 4 H Contests. Lordsburg Animas Virden and Cotton City participants won blue red ribbons in clothing demonstrations general home economics and sewing while the county team topped livestock judging and public speaking events.
Animas weather data were collected by the Post Office for the U S Weather Bureau. The records note daily readings and locations used for meteorological observations in Animas, reflecting ongoing data gathering for national weather service needs.
The Rev Kenneth Ford spoke on Lite Pillows of the Heart at a noon Thursday senior citizens luncheon in Lordsburg First Methodist Church. Thirteen members attended as Rev Strickland MCed. Roy and Mrs Bonar, former Lordsburg residents, discussed forming a club and activities.
More than 1,000 persons are expected to converge on New Mexico College campus for two August events. The 18th annual New Mexico School Bus Drivers Institute will run Aug 6–11 with about 600 drivers, while the th annual New Mexico High School Student Council Workshop will run Aug 12–16 with 400 students and sponsors from NM, UT and TX. Housing will be used after the summer session. Bill Lemon directs the Bus Driver Institute. Ira Bogard leads the Student Council Workshop. Over 100 schools belong to the association.
Within three weeks teachers will move to Lordsburg seeking houses or apartments to rent for the coming year. Anyone with available housing should contact Supt. Wesley Freeburg at 542-9361 or 542-3756 with pertinent information for the new teachers.
Sheriff Posse crews repair chutes and gates at Hidalgo County Fairgrounds for a two show junior rodeo on July 28 and 29. Entry deadline is noon Saturday July 28. Contestants from Silver City Deming Hurley and Arizona towns Franklin Duncan Las Cruces Douglas expected. ages 18 and under. Barrel races scheduled by age groups 0 and up with open events. Chamber of Commerce sponsors seek to make it annual with stock furnished by Garland Johnson Ani mas and Sven Thygerson Virden.
C F Schmalenberger LULAC district director from Las Cruces visited the local chapter at La Fiesta Club for a regular meeting. He reported on council progress and outlined expectations for the coming year. Plans call for a free barbecue July 20 at the picnic grounds starting at 3 p.m.
Dr. Lyle E. Robinson, a 1956 Colorado State University graduate, is now associated with Dr. E. J. Giemer at the Silver City Veterinary Hospital on Ft. Bayard Highway. He was active in athletics at Western High School.
Mr and Mrs Claude Fuller returned home after a four month visit in California. They stayed with Warren Fuller and family near San Francisco and Basil Fuller and family at Newport Beach. Basil drove his parents home.
Mrs Vista Duncan and Mrs Mabel Singletary of Stamford Texas stayed with Mr and Mrs Elmer Jeanes this week after touring the west coast and visiting the Seattle World’s Fair.
