A fragmentary report notes a Friday meeting about a local health issue. Koff comments that the goal was to discuss problems caused by vermin and rat control, urging public cooperation while denying any attempt to push a policy on residents. The text mentions health department involvement and limited public interest.
Geneva Richardson McCart led with first place in a rope making demonstration. Linda Payne Hatch earned top honors in a bread demonstration and a plaque. Payne’s blue ribbon, red ribbon for her blouse and other awards highlighted the Plano home economics display. Lorraine Moore and Vicki Pated received ribbons and pins for their entries while Nelson earned a red ribbon for his blouse.
Sometime Monday night or Tuesday burglars entered the Community Public Service Co. and Hidalgo County Health Department offices. From CPS clocks and a toaster were stolen and the safe handle pried off. at the health dept medicines and vaccines were scattered. Albert Levario was arrested for breaking and entering Valeria Allen Smith's house and is a suspect in the health dept and CPS break ins as investigators probe further.
Mr and Mrs Jack Morgan and Lou Ann return Saturday from a brief trip to northern Arizona with no incidents reported and plans to resume daily routines.
Sunrise inspection led the New Mexico State Highway Department to seal entrances to Highway 80 underpass with a permanent fence and gates, cover the blacktop with sand, and import 10 cowboys. A cattle drive of 400 head from the John T. Muir ranch to the stockyards proceeded without incident, improving local cattle handling safety.
During August a number of teachers seek housing for the school term beginning later in the month. Landlords with houses or apartments for rent should call Superintendent Freeburg at telephone 32 and list the available units for teachers seeking accommodations. Wesley Freeburg.
The Board of Education voted to lengthen the school term by about 10 days to a minimum of 180 days. Faculty workshops begin August 25 with freshmen registration August 26 and other students August 27. The term closes May 29, 1959. Maintenance staff prepared buildings and new desks were bought for elementary rooms and science department equipment.
The junior band will perform before the football stadium tonight at p.m. Entry is free and the walk in gate on the west side will open.
A joint installation of officers for Robert Swan Post No. 30 and its Auxiliary took place Monday night at the Legion Hall Lordsburg. Buford Slover Jr and Mrs Slover presided with several officers sworn in including Harold Scofield Clemente Biase Felix Jiminez Robert Williams Elmer Jeanes and others. Auxiliary officers Ena Mitchell Elmer Jeanes Olla Joplin Connie Saucedo also installed later. A pot luck supper preceded the ceremonies and district commander Ray Saucedo received a pin while Connie Saucedo earned a past president jewel. 23 members paid dues with a July 28 deadline for fall conference in Albuquerque August 23.
The Beta Sigma Phi Xi Phi chapter will stage a rummage sale in the building east of the Post Office on Saturday August 2. Hours start at 9 a.m. and continue while customers arrive. Chairwoman Mrs Nora Huna invites donations and will arrange pickups at 321 J.
The Hidalgo County Fair, Sheriff's Posse Rodeo and Old Timer's celebration were scheduled in Lordsburg. The Old Timer's banquet opens Thursday Sept 18 with a parade Friday Sept 19, livestock judging at 11 am, sale at 1 30 pm, rodeo shows Friday to Sunday Sept 19–21 with final 2 pm Sunday performance. Frank Willis of Duncan Arizona named arena director.
Bishop Lumber leads with eight wins one loss and has clinched the pennant for the regular season. July 31 make up game from July 24 rainout will occur followed by a six-team round robin. July 17 Lubermen beat C P S 11 to 5 and Bishop defeats Ramirez Radio 13 to 4 while Wimp s Shell prevails 5 to 4 over Powell Plumbers.
Rainbow Girls of Assembly No. 17 marked Founder's Day on July 8 with a city pool swimming party and a hamburger fry on Miss Katy Spencer's patio. Miss worthy advisor of the assembly served as general chairman. The Eastern Star assisted with the food preparation. Twenty two girls and seven adults attended.
