County Commissioners Meet By SHERRI ARREDONDO
County Commissioners met Friday with a small agenda. They dropped the state gravel pit lease in favor of free BLM land use and approved sending a letter to the BLM requesting county road access. Senior citizen contracts were approved and bids for five Sheriff's Department police packages and a road department truck will be advertised in the July 16 Liberal. The library painting request was approved if the Revenue Sharing Fund balance is valid. Fairgrounds repair was funded from the Fair Board Fund. Gazebo aid to Lordsburg was tabled pending city action. Chen Named Superintendent of Hidalgo Smelter Near Playas
W. J. Pete Chen has been appointed Superintendent of Phelps Dodge Hidalgo Smelter near Playas effective July 2. Chen, a 1970 University of Arizona chemical engineering graduate, began with Phelps Dodge in 1970 at New Cornelia, rose to acid plant foreman, then led technical services, and later served as Morenci smelter project director before becoming director of technical services and research in 1981.
