Hidalgo Handicapped Donation Drive Ends August Sixteen

For their benefit Hidalgo Handicapped will receive donations of one dollar each until August sixteenth. The winner will receive fifty dollars in trade at H Bishop Co. Contact S W S H Bishops or members.

County Commissioners Meet By SHERRI ARREDONDO

County Commissioners met Friday with a small agenda. They dropped the state gravel pit lease in favor of free BLM land use and approved sending a letter to the BLM requesting county road access. Senior citizen contracts were approved and bids for five Sheriff's Department police packages and a road department truck will be advertised in the July 16 Liberal. The library painting request was approved if the Revenue Shar­ing Fund balance is valid. Fairgrounds repair was funded from the Fair Board Fund. Gazebo aid to Lordsburg was tabled pending city action. Tourist Center Meeting set for July 21 at 10:00.

Ellinwood Names Mary Lynne Newell Assistant District Attorney

Ellinwood appoints Mary Lynne Newell of Santa Fe to the new assistant district attorney post created by the last legislature. She starts July 1, lives in Silver City, and will mostly serve Grant County. A GWU Law graduate of 1979, she was admitted to the New Mexico Bar in August 1979 after a stint as a contract attorney with Sutin Thayer Brown in Santa Fe.

Rabies Clinic Set for July 17 in Lordsburg

A Hidalgo Humane Society rabies clinic will be held Saturday July 17 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Lordsburg Fire Station with Dr. Linda Locklar in charge.

City Corner Report On Gas System Upgrades And City Cleanup

The city advances gas repairs replacing 400 feet of corroded two inch service line behind 4th Street and targets leaks on 2nd Street this week. City crews remove weeds, crack sealing, then road oil, and replace meters aged over ten years with older units dating to 1950. Plans include tearing down abandoned buildings, with owners offered reasonable-cost options. inquiries directed to City Clerk. Expenses on Short Park recreation building noted as of July 1982 total 72000 with 1982-83 budget of 35000 for floor and lights.

Chen Named Superintendent of Hidalgo Smelter Near Playas

W. J. Pete Chen has been appointed Superintendent of Phelps Dodge Hidalgo Smelter near Playas effective July 2. Chen, a 1970 University of Arizona chemical engineering graduate, began with Phelps Dodge in 1970 at New Cornelia, rose to acid plant foreman, then led technical services, and later served as Morenci smelter project director before becoming director of technical services and research in 1981.

Officials Tour Lordsburg Industrial Sites in New Mexico

Commerce and Industry officials from Santa Fe led by James F. Garvin toured Lordsburg with Mayor Stephen Hill County Manager Tom Anderson and HADECO members. The group visited city county and private sites then met at Lordsburg airport to discuss cooperation and regional development plans.

Prospectors Visit Lordsburg for luncheon with officials

Lordsburg businessmen and city and county officials were hosted to a luncheon by the Prospectors, goodwill ambassadors from the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce, at Jim's American Restaurant. The group emphasized regional cooperation and discussed the new Tourist Information Center planned for Lordsburg after a whirlwind visit to local businesses.

Sears Floral Design opens with grand three day event

An expectant crowd of over 50 lined up as Sears Floral Design store opened. Mayor Steve Hill cut the ribbon for Jim and Jane Dearman whose grand opening featured free gifts for early shoppers, balloons, cake, fruit punch, and a drawing for a black and white TV on Saturday July 10. Cindy Martinez and Cleo Turrentine assisted, stock shown, and staff praised for hard work in expanding merchandising space.

Andazola Walz Open Law Firm in Albuquerque

Two former Silver City men, Jerry A. Walz and Ron E. Andazola, have opened a law firm in Albuquerque. Walz, a former editor of the Silver City Daily Press and Lordsburg Liberal, was previously an associate at Gilman & Maguire in Albuquerque. Andazola comes from the New Mexico Attorney General's Office, with an office in Albuquerque.

John Irick To Visit Here In Lordsburg

Republican gubernatorial candidate John Irick will visit Lordsburg on Wednesday July 21 as a guest at a no host luncheon at the Lordsburg Civic Center starting at 11 30 a.m. A spokesman says the luncheon menu features a barbecue sandwich potato salad beans chips and dips with a five dollar donation requested.

Buvens Named New Head of Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce

Alene Buvens was appointed manager of the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce by chamber directors after a recent meeting. A Lordsburg native and University of Texas at El Paso graduate, she has worked as a benefit authorizer for the Social Security Administration in Richmond, California. The role, vacant after a move and reorganization, starts immediately with support from the City of Lordsburg and the New Mexico Department of Tourism and Travel to maintain operations and member outreach.
