Lordsburg Faces Heavy Bill With I-10 Lighting Stay On

City officials in Lordsburg met in a special session to decide whether to turn off or scale back Interstate 10 street lights. G Parker Bell of the New Mexico State Highway Department said the FHA will not allow removal, citing about $30,000 tied up in the I-10 system and a city obligation to cover operation costs. He noted the current lighting is excessive but must stay on to meet federal guidelines. The council might reduce lighting 61 percent while keeping safety, but plan feasibility hinges on FHA approval and prior federal funding.
