Payne resigns Hidalgo County Commission post remains vacant

Governor Apodaca may appoint or leave the seat vacant until the next general election after Lloyd Payne resigns and moves to Bernalillo County. Sven Thygerson leads the Democratic primary for Payne's seat to face Paul Gandara in November. The board approved 3500 for Southwest Services to the Handicapped in Hidalgo and delayed Grant Nelson’s appointment to Hidalgo General Hospital Board. Merlin Clouse and Sam Cureton hired as county road maintainers starting July 16.

Land Settlement Approved in Lordsburg Over 17 Acres

Silver City attorney John Reynolds will seek an out of court settlement with the Peter Chase family on land valuation for about 17 condemned acres to fund a sewage plant. The city faces a potential jury trial if negotiations fail. The Chase family contends value nears $1 000 per acre, while city appraisals ranged from 50 to 100 dollars per acre. Lordsburg also votes to add 2000 dollars to the Chamber of Commerce from Ledgers Tax funds for color brochures, per manager John Robertson.

Animas School Board Meets to Discuss Rodeo School

The Animas School Board will hold a regular meeting Thursday July 15 at 8 30 p m in the school library. The agenda includes a decision on the Rodeo school building and the public is invited.

Local law enforcement reported a relatively quiet July 4th with no major countywide trouble. Hidalgo County Sheriff Gene Moore noted no major incidents, while city police logged several firecracker complaints common for the week.

Lordsburg Board Hires Four Teachers and Librarian

Lordsburg Board of Education hired four new teachers and a librarian for the 1976-77 school year. Jesus Galindo joins from Deming as physical education instructor and coach, Diana Breeze from Albuquerque as special education instructor, Francis Davis from Sierra Vista as elementary teacher, and Dr. Daryl Hindman from Silver City as special education. Resignations of Yoland Dechert and Rose Kartchner were accepted. Miller Chevrolet of Lordsburg was the low bidder for a lease purchase agreement to provide a school vehicle.

Dust storm crash injures two boys to Galveston

In Lubbock Texas Moore cites high winds and a dust storm causing a chain accident. Seven people went to Lordsburg Hospital and three to Hillcrest General in Silver. Two eight and nine year old burn victims had third degree burns over 30 percent of their bodies and were moved to Shriner Burn Center in Galveston aboard Tuck Grimes Air.
