Fern Sawyer Leads Democratic Platform Debate in Miami Beach

Fern Sawyer of Negal criticizes the proposed Democratic platform as too literal and opposed to collective farming. The 150 member platform committee met in Washington with M E Bolin, while Fern and other delegates attended sessions in Miami Beach to shape the 1972 campaign platform and oppose liberal bids.

EP Natural Gas seeks rate hike across Southwest and Pacific Northwest

El Paso Natural Gas asks the Federal Power Commission for authority to raise wholesale rates in its Southern Division and Northwest Division to cover higher costs in capital, labor, materials and taxes. The proposed increases average 0.047 cents per thousand cubic feet in the South and 0.081 cents in the Northwest, yielding about 6 million and 3.8 million dollars respectively, with a target 9 percent return on invested capital. The filing also seeks tariff changes to offset future gas price shifts and notes possible public hearings under FPC rules.

Physician Opens Office Here in Hidalgo County

Thad J. Earl M D and two associates moved from Defiance Ohio to establish practice in the former Austin Clinic offices at Second and Main Streets. Dr Earl and Dr Raimonde recently studied radiology and Miss Hoffman trained in emergency room medicine. A new Hidalgo General Hospital laboratory was installed under Dr Earl with Lyle Harrington as lab technician. The Earls plan to move their five children here within weeks to Glen Acres.

Santa Fe Opera Seeks Fund Drive for 1972 Season

With the 1972 season opening, the Santa Fe Opera launches a major fund drive targeting a $728,000 Ford Foundation grant. The money will reduce post fire indebtedness and finance a cash reserve to stabilize operations, with $325,000 to be raised from donors locally and statewide.

Lordsburg School Superintendent Resigns to State Dept

Bill H. Darnell has resigned as Lordsburg superintendent of schools effective July 20. He will join the State Department of Education in Santa Fe. No replacement has yet been announced.

Little League Baseball Results From July Week

National League All Stars topped American League 6 to 5 on July 4 with Victor Somosa the winner and Tony Rodriguez the loser. July 7 saw Prices beat Animas 11 to 3 as Tony Rodriguez allowed four hits and Somosa took the loss. VFW defeated Piggy Bank 9 to 8 in the July 7 opener, Pat Garcia a winning pitcher. July 8 Parkers Insurance beat Border Patrol 8 to 3 with Elks losing 17 to 0 behind George Arvizo. July 5 Pancho Guardiola won for Federal Resources over Circle H 7-4. Kimbley Shell homered for Circle H in the second game after Jim's News Service won 6-4. July 6 Jim's News Service beat Federal Resources 6-6 as Guardiola scored, Verdugo winning and Ornelas losing. In the Circle H vs Kimbley Shell tilt, Kimbley Shell won 11-4 with Bobby Gomez pitching. Softball saw Deming Merchants defeat Lordsburg 16-1 on July 4 with Chava Villegas a four-hitter and Frank Chacon homering for Deming. July 6 Smith Ford beat Federal Resources 13-3 as Freddie Levario allowed six hits. Mel Phillips took the loss.

Mary Randall Named Honor Roll at New Mexico Tech

Of 744 students enrolled this semester at New Mexico Tech 179 qualified for placement on the college honor roll. These students earned a 4.0 GPA or better while carrying more than twelve hours. Mary Randall a Lor graduate was among the 24 percent on the honor roll this past semester.
