Labor reforms eyed to reshape state departments

Gov Dave Cargo proposes a new State Department to centralize labor and public safety functions including labor laws wage standards and training. A three state Labor and Industrial Commission would be reassessed, with a July 18 meeting planned among state officials and employer groups.

Elks Clinch II Championship

The Elks clinch second place with a 5-3 win over the Jaycees, Elks catcher Dan Herrera driving in two runs. Jaycees earlier defeated VFW 11-7, while KP fell to Elks 10-0 in another game. VFW beat CPS 12-4 as Julio Rodriguez allowed two hits.

Shirley Hitson Elected National FHA Vice President

Miss Shirley Hitson state president of the Future Homemakers of America of New Mexico was elected national FHA vice president of recreation. She will be installed at a banquet in the Biltmore Hotel Los Angeles at the end of the four day convention. The New Mexico delegation includes 23 high school delegates. Peggy Roark of Animas Debbie Kirby Gloria Noce and Miss Hitson's mother from Lordsburg also attend.

Knife Wound Victim In Good Condition

Ramon Mata is reported in satisfactory condition after surgery for a knife wound to the abdomen from an altercation at 2 15 a m Sunday on St. Blvd across the tracks from the depot. A charge of aggravated assault fourth degree felony has been filed against E D Evans of El Paso. Hidalgo County sheriff and city police continue the investigation.

The Board of Trustees of First Methodist Church held their organizational meeting for the new year last Sunday night. J R Badgett man, L, and Burke Stiles were elected chair, vice chair, and secretary respectively, with Co. Vv. Nunn and Gilbert Buvens also attending.

Southwest Supply Tops Foodliner In Opening Softball Win

Southwest Supply opened the men's softball league with a 9 to 1 victory over Foodliner as Bruce Bigelow pitched a two hitter and contributed two hits. Joe Estrada had two hits for the winners while Bart Bejarano and Mario Mejia had singles for Foodliner. The Foodliner run came on an error in the first inning.

Wylie Bros. Low Bidder On Street Reconstruction

The City Council accepted Wylie Brothers Construction Co. as the low bidder at 307,707.30 for street rebuilding work, with Universal Constructors and Or. Cowart bidding higher. The plan includes paving removal and full rebuilds on Animas, Main, and Second streets with state participation. A separate bond proposal for 642,000 in new and old money was approved, with staged interest rates.
