Gov. Dave Cargo faces House criticism over forest service rules as he defends grazing limits and land retirements. The issue involves permissions for grazing in multiple counties, proposed land retirements, and state funding for migrant health services amid drought.
A collision six miles west of town on Interstate 10 left two children dead and three others injured. A pickup from Lowell Arizona driven by Cora Boyer overturned after side striking a large semi trailer driven by Charles Brown of Miami Florida. Mrs Boyer and Walter Boyer remained hospitalized with serious injuries while Charles Steiner recovered from lacerations. Alice Boyer and Andrew Steiner died soon after the crash and the incident involved a camper body pickup with six people aboard.
Nine people became United States citizens in a Deming ceremony at Luna County Court House. Edmundo Romo Rosa Avila Chavira and Francisco Javier Herrera took the oath with four other Lordsburg natives among the group. The ceremony was administered by District Judge Norman Hodges.
The Las Cruces District Office of the Bureau of Land Management completed an installation contract for four game watering devices at $1,500 per unit. Redding Pump and Well Service of San Simon, Arizona, constructed the system. Helicopters from Ft. Huachuca lifted equipment to sites in the Peloncillo and Hatchet Mountains to aid the Desert Big Horn Sheep herd. Harlen Smith served as the inspecting officer.
Battery C of the 200th Artillery and local National Guard unit returned from Annual Field Training. Captain Juan P. Moralez led a strong camp with TFX exercises at Hueco Range and air defense practice. Promotions … new enlistees … Fort Bliss six months training underway.
The Hidalgo Rifle and Pistol Club will meet Wednesday July 12 at the National Guard Armory at 8 p.m. All members are urged to attend this important meeting.
District Attorney E. C. Senna announced Dwight D Arthur 38 will serve as assistant district attorney in Silver City joining William S Martin Jr The Sixth Judicial District approved an additional assistant and secretary duties Arthur previously practiced in Deming since 1960 and is a Silver City native He graduated from Southern Methodist Law School in 1958 and was admitted to the Texas bar the same year He took the New Mexico bar in 1999 Arthur began his duties July 1 Gloria Alvidrez was named additional secretary to assist Jean Norton serving Hidalgo Luna and Grant counties Arthur will accompany Senna on weekly trips with Martin in the Silver City office.
Sponsors are being located for the men’s softball league which will start on Tuesday. The league has about 60 men divided into four teams. Players can call the city pool or Dick McKelvie to learn their team. Games will be on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the city ball park.
A men's pants sale will be held at St. Joseph's Parish Hall after Masses on Sunday July 9. The pants are new factory defective stock in men's sizes and will sell for no more than 75 cents per pair.
